I didn't take the pinion out, so it's still set to where the factory put it. Had I removed the pinion I would have to redo everything.

Not if he didn't remove the pinion gear, only if he put in a new gear set. And 9 times out of 10 if the new gear set is made by Ford the machining is exact enough that the same pinion shim can be used. It should be checked though and the backlash will always have to reset.

BS I took them out when I rebuilt my Traction lock, you just place the gears on the other 2 at the edge of the window and then have a buddy turn an axle shaft until the hole is lined up.

MIKEC is 100% correct, I just tried his listed procedure and it worked perfect, the gears went back in on the first try!!!! THANK YOU MIKEC !!!! you saved me a ton of grief.

Once I finish the front I'll post the results of my 5 lug conversion and 2003 Mach1 wheels on my 85 Capri. Thanks again.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but, MikeC, I am having the same problems with the spider gears. They both came out when I rotated it w/o the driveshaft moving. Now I can't get them back in. I followed the directions you posted. I tried one by itself and it went in but when I try both they wont grab. Which way is the "S" in there supposed to be pointing? How can I get the gears to grab the spider gears? red390gt, do you have any extra tips to help me out. I really gotta get this conversion finished.

I had the same problem.
I positioned both gears and kept turning one axle until they were right. It took several tries to figure out the right position.
The clip is a real pain to install. It took me quite a while and I ended up getting it in place with a pair of vise grips and a hammer.
