HELP! Oil pan vs. some big brace bar

I am installing a 302 into my 66 mustang - the oil pan is too deep - it hits the thick bar that runs between the control arms - first - what is the big bar called? yeah, i'm a bit of a dimwith with suspension parts - second - what do i do to correct this "little" issue????

The bar is a chassis brace, can't do without it.

Are you using the early front sump pan or is it a late model with both front and rear sumps? The late model versions will not work. I don't know why a stock front sump pan wont fit.

Check your motor mounts to make sure they aren't broken and the rubber just fell off.

front or rear sump oil pan???

front sump - 302 came out of 71 torino - can the chassis brace be replaced with a custom one that has a deeper "dip" to allow clearance for the oil pan? I have seen this done on the occasional Chevy - but not sure on the old mustang - and to all who said - "No problem! the 302 and C4 tranny will bolt right up!" NYAH! i have about pulled every hair out of my hubby's head over this engine swap oh, well - them's the breaks

maybe just go out and buy a new oil pan. I am sure you can pick one up for cheap. Im not saying its the end all solution but maybe you should get a oil pan that is made for the year your car was built.

That will be my first choice - I consulted my NPD catalog and it looks as if the oil pan for a 64-66 is deep on the front and dips long before the one that is on the engine now - Just out of curiosity, will an oil pan from a 289 match up to a 302? they are the same block, right?

yea they are the same block. I believe the 302 has longer journals if im not mistaken.

You'll probably need the oil pump and pickup to go with the new pan, also.

what oil pan is it? its obviously not a mustang motor then if the oil pan wont fit, unless your motor mounts are incorrect letting the motor sit lower than it should.

I agree with 65fastback... unless the pan is different than a normal front sump 302 pan, and your motor mounts are good, it should fit. I put a HUGE canton pan under mine and I just had to drop the cross member to get it out and in. No rubbing afterwards.

i think you have another probelm somewhere, i don't think ford ever changed the small block pans dramatically enough for what you are describing to happen

It turn out that the oil pan is the same for the 302 mustang and Grand Torino - I have found out that there are two different motor mounts for the 302 - I am taking one engine bracket off my car and one motor mount off the engine to a local Ford rod shop. I'm hoping that i have the "short" motor mount with a stud ' cause there seems to be a "tall" motor mount with a slightly longer bolt that may fix my problem - I'm hoping anyway - I'll post the results when I find out!

Did you change out the Frame mounts also?
A stock 302 front sump should work.
It does in the Cougar.

You may be on to something with the motor mount issue. I have a similar problem with my 351c in a 69 coupe. The correct Hedman headers will not fit, the collectors hit the floor pans. The old brand-x headers that I have on now just barely clear. The motor mounts are different for conv. chassis. There is a tall" mount and a "short" one. The difference must be significant. I'm doing the same thing this winter, bringing one of mine to NPD and buying the opposite.

I did - I'm betting my problem is the "short" motor mounts - I have searched high and low for different frame brackets - but can't find anything different from what I have - It has GOT to be the motor mounts themselves
