need help badly on my 67 mustang coupe with 6 cylinder engine and auto tranny.. The engine would start but would not idle. i drive it once for a few miles.suddenly the engine splutter and spewd black smoke. it would not start since then. i've changed the spark plugs, condenser and contact point. i've checked the timing too. i then dismantle the carburetor(single barrel) and cleaned it. the gas tank was also cleaned. fuel pump and filter was replaced with a new one. it the starts and runs smoothly for a while. after a few miles of driving, the engine dies whenever i get my foot off the accelerator. it would start but would not idle. i have to step on the gas that hard just to keep the engine running. where or what do you think the problem is. should i buy a new carburetor. the mechanic said, the carb isn't giving enough gas. what should i do

Could be a million things but first trace all of your vaccuum lines to make sure one is not disconnected. Don't start turning screws on the carb until all other possibilities are eliminated.

Even thought its kinda a big investment, around 250 bucks, the new carb did just the trick on my gfs 67 200ci. It would run but smoked and all the rest of the bad things they do, and after we got a carb from mustangs unlimited, it purrs. It runs better than my efi daily driver. I was impressed.

Did you replace the fuel lines when everything else was cleaned? Mine were clogged when something similar was happening to mine when I first bought it. If you have to replace the carb, I have a suggestion. I bought a progressive two bbl for mine from stovebolt. It and the adaptor ran me less than $100 and it runs great (a little better on gas too). The adaptor makes it little tall but it should be ok under the hood.

Has the car been sitting? Could be water in the fuel. The black smoke is indicative of a carb problem. That where I would focus.

ignition problem it will start but you have to keep revving it to keep it running it wont idle. which tells me you have to spin the motor to get it to burn all the gass but at the same time your loading it up with gass. my guesss is either points or fuel or both
