HELP! Sticky White Stuff All Over My Trunk

A morning of drifting a 90 Degree corner at 35 mph begged my Chemical BC Fire Extinguisher to hop out of my helmet and discharge all over my trunk, Snell 90 compliant helmet, $200 car cover, yada, yada....

How will I remove this chemical retardation powder from my trunk & stuff? :shrug: Not so easy as the household AB. It is sticky and so far, a nightmare to even touch.

BC extinguishers have sodium bicarbinate (basicly baking soda) so you will have to spray it down with water to neutralize it since it can be slightly corrosive.
(The stuff there should be mostly water soluable though)
Any sticky agent left should clean with anything that is good with gum removal. (orange cleaner etc)
This won't be an easy job. :(
Might need a rug replacement in the end.

:nonono: Thanks bootman. I was just reading the MSDS on the damn thing. I guess now I need to check to see if it shot any of the electronics - speakers + wiring and taillight harnesses. Rest of the stuff can be replaced.

I don't regret carrying one. I helped a woman and her small children with an electrical fire a year back. Bless God to this day for having one, but this just is a total pain in the arse. I am exhausted after a long 12 hour day and the last thing I feel like doing is playing with Silica, naCHO3 and Mica that will irritate every orifice and cranny on my body. :(

Lesson learned. Mounting plates and brakets are provided for a reason. I am greatful it was in the trunk and not in the backseat. :owned:

Can I let this sit until tomorrow evening? Or am I getting out of my PJs and puting on the chemical suit now? :shrug:

Sticky white stuff on your car....hmmm THAT coulda been worded better.


I had the same thing happen to me except it was after getting my deck lid repainted and after realizing the body shop doesnt clean up their mess. Entire trunk was filled with red powder.

One extra day shouldn't make that big of a difference.
Most of the damage has already been done.
I agree about carrying one. One should be in everyone's vehicle and home.
Good luck and wear some protection when messing with that stuff.

I carry an extinguiser and use velcro to keep it in place. It could be easier and maybe even cheaper just to replace the carpet in the trunk.

After all, it's the Mustang Jenneration.

I am not sure what velcro would have prevented this. LOL No, Sir, it was a matter of Physics, inertia and an unpinned fire extinguisher just looking for the right moment to discharge. :lol:

I prefer to be loved and respected for WHO I am, rather than WHAT I am, Stan. Heck, I have a whole darn generation named after me now! WOOT..... Feelin' the Love, indeed. :nice:

Whatever you do. Don't I repeat DO NOT use a pressure washer. My manager at work decided this was the best way to deal with it. In the interior of the truck. It went from being a dusty mess. To being a slimy mess ALL OVER the interior. In every orrifice of the interior.

Oh man! You know, just when I think I have read it all. Ta'Da!!!

Thinking on this one very carefully, I cannot even think how your boss would have considered that as a possible clean-up method. :doh: ROFLMAO. I would have enjoyed a smooth Lager and unfolded the lounge chair to watch that bright idea unfold. :cheers:

I am off to bestow my patronage (and Chrysilline Silica/Mica/naCHO3) on Chevron and their industrial vacuum right now. Hopefully no one will notice me with my turtle neck sweater pulled over my nose and mouth with safety goggles on.

All I did was shake my head and turn away. I left him dripping wet in the interior. Good luck with the vacuum. May it suck enough for you.

Gentlemen shake their heads and turn away. A lady unfolds the lounge chair and snaps the cap off a Lager. 'Tis a spectator sport to watch such intelligence unfold. :nice:

The industrial vacuum worked like a charm. The naCHO3 is a skin irritant no doubt about that. Now, I have to surf for a college website and find a Chemistry Professor who will answer me on how I can neutralize it without causing harm to the electrical, speakers, fuel sending unit module, cardboard and plastic. lol

All of it. 4 passes, duct tape + shop vac tools and $4.00 did the job. According to a couple fire supression company FAQs the largest issue is the dust and silica/mica. The sodium bicarbonate is a mild skin irritant, yet should be okay so long as I don't get naked and roll around in the trunk.

So, I think this concludes my Fire Extinguisher fun and upon replacement, I am putting the extinguisher UNDER the carpet panel in the spare tire tub instead of inside my helmet.

Lesson Learned & Jenn / OUT
