I just installed new rear Tokico shocks, "B" springs and Gabriel Quad Shocks. The car has 255 Nexen tires. After installing the springs and shocks the car has developed a loud "thump, thump thump" in first and second gear under hard accerleration. I can feel the the thump in the center console.

I looked under the car and can see that the upper control arms are moving forward and backward where they connect to the body and the lower ones have moved a little back and forth.

The driver's side torque box is slightly twisted and the sheet metal has a small tear.

The question-what's happening? Are the control arms suposed to move front to back?

If they are moving, is the bolt hole too large or are the control srm bushins shot?

The torque boxes have a bolt in brace which i think is aftermarket, what else to do with those?

Thanks

I would look into a good aftermarket torque box reinforcemnet kit like from wild rides racing. My uppers pulle dcompletely off the car and no they are not supposed to be moving forward and backwards it sjust one of the weak points in stock mustangs..

Whats probably happening is the drive shaft is contacting the parking brake cable. To confirm this look for witness marks in the "tunnel" (drive shaft tunnel). to correct this you will need to do 2 things.

1. Install adjustable rear end snubber. the old one should be wasted. 2. Then repair your upper and lower controll arm mounting boxes (torque boxes) wild rides makes a couple of kits to do this. welding is required. chris

turns out the new shocks and quads destroyed the bushings in the control arms (Summit brand). I replaced with Motorsport HD uppers and have Pro3i lowers on the way.

Also, the new upper control arms substantially improved the ride, I didn't realize that the control arms played such a big role in maintaining a smooth ride.

I'll have a set of Summit rear control arms with new bushings for sale soon.

Your bushings were destroyed long before you installed your new shocks. Someone, at some point, has ridden that pony hard and put it away wet. It isn't easy to rip the torque box mounts with street tires and stock bushings but put a set of slicks on combined with high RPM launches and you've got problems. That someone changed the lower control arms and put TB reinforcements on (most likely after they ripped the boxes) says it's seen some prior serious abuse.

I'd closely inspect all of the torque boxes (upper and lower) for damage.

A set of good UCA's and LCA's along with torqu box reinforcments will fix your problems.

Fix the damage to your current torque boxes as well. Ignore this step at your own peril.
