As the story goes…

I took in a one owner 1986 Mustang GT, sight unseen. Yeah, I know.

It was a one owner car and had been sitting in jack stands for 5 years.

I was told it ran and drove but needed some minor repairs.

Modsallegedly)

When it got delivered, it wouldn’t start. I replaced the fluids, changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery, and ignition module. The car started, but seemed to have a miss and would stall, or at least try to stall. When the car was shut off or stalled it wouldn’t always restart. I replaced the distributor, correctly, by putting the car to TDC and properly aligning the rotor with cyl 1. I then removed the SPOUT and timed the car with a timing light to 10 degrees. The timing did seem to jump when I was timing it with a light, but it’s hard to determine how many degrees to accurately explain it. The car sounded healthy, but seemed to have a shake or miss and would bog down or stall of the throttle was pushed aggressively. Small throttle inputs seemed fine.

I’m truly at a loss.

When the car is revved, the motor sounds really incredible. However, something still isn’t right. I’m guessing a stretched timing chain?

Please help

So, it [did] run since you've had but not for very long, is that about right?

I got it started after replacing the parts that I mentioned in the post. It will sometimes run decently. However, if the throttle is pushed hard, it wants to stall, or it will just run somewhat poorly and stall on its own.

After it stalls it very frequently doesn’t want to start again.

I’m very unfamiliar with odb1 cars, but I was going to give it a try tomorrow. I’m open to a how to if you don’t mind.

Check fuel pressure, make sure the alternator is charging and, and aw hell go here:

Help me create the "Surging Idle Checklist"

Updated 05 July 2022 to add rough idle when cold and smooth idle when up to normal operating temperature. See the EGR tech information, section #15 for more help. Many of you are familiar with the "Cranks OK, but No Start Checklist for Fuel Injected Mustangs" checklist and the No Crank...

My guess is leaning on the MAP sensor going bad , a vacuum leak or the Coolant Temp Sensor or maybe a combo of the 3 as those 1986's came with Speed Density ECUs with SEFI and the other thing is to verify the ECU is correct and that the capacitors arent leaking electrolytic fluid which is acidic because the 1986 engine had swirl ported valves or some crap like that and using an ECU from a newer 1987/1988 with speed density wont work out as intended without a tuning chip also to mention some of the pinouts dont jive either..

Below is a small 60 pinout schematic in PDF format I made up showing a multitude of different Year mustangs and other related ecus .

Good Luck
