Help with a 01 GT

Hey guys I've got a 01 GT with the 4.6. I've had it since dec and have put about 15,000 miles on it since then. It had a prochamber on it when I got it, but I wanted it to be legal so I got a hold of the original exhaust, but the dealer made me give back the prochamber in exchange for the stock h-pipe. It still has flowmaster mufflers on it though. Now the problem is that it makes a tick whenever it's running. I work at a lube shop and I've pulled it in and whenever its in the bay and the pit is below it, I can't hear it, but when I go downstairs and listen its much louder then it is from the top. I also can't really hear it that well when I have the hood open, but when its shut and there isn't a big hole underneath it I can hear it. It's not really loud enough to hear inside of the car unless I'm next to something for it to echo off of.

I've taken it to a mechanic and he looked at it and revved it acouple of times and said there is nothing wrong with it. But someone else told me to add an additive to the oil so I put a quart of that Lucas oil into it and it didn't help. Then some other people have told me that the lifters could be dirty or not getting oil. I'm not sure what it could be, could it hopefully be just a simple exhaust leak?

And I've been told by some the cars previous owners friends that its had a new motor put in it, I'm the 3rd and I guess the 1st beat the hell out of it. I changed the oil after I bought it and a cigarette bud came out of the pan, its' also missing a clip that clips the dipstick to the valve cover.

What do you guys think it is or what I should do?

OH My God I'm Sorry. :(

Take it back.......if they'll have it.

Missing small parts like brackets can be an indication that the motor has been open, or that it has had major repair. Maybe during the major work the mechanic dropped his cig........

If it has had any major repair and the dealer did not tell you this might be enough to make them take it back.

Seriously though try to take it back. My first mustang that I owned was an 85 convertible H.O. 4 days after owning it, the engine bay started fire caused by a rear main seal leak and leaky exhaust. Rebuilt the engin, he claimed that it only had 5K on the rebuild, bearing wear shot. Long story short, I rebuilt engine, transmission (sent it back 7 times), painted it, new top, stuck about $10K in the car and it still didn't run right. Sold it, heard that it was sold three more times and then someone took the engine apart and took the cam out, the guy who built the engine the first time put a hotter cam in the engine that matched nothing. Take it from someone with experience and bring it back. When I bought my car which I own now (01 GT) it told the dealer that I would be taking the car for several hours to look it over. Brought it home and went over the entire car. Perfect, so I bought it. :D

Great..I bought it in december, do you guys think that I can take it back?
Doubtful, at this point, but I'd try my best to shove it back up their azz.
And the ticking is likely an exhaust leak. Did you get any sort of warranty with it? Sounds like you bought a pony that's been ridden hard and put away wet. Why did owner #2 sell it?
You said you changed the oil after you bought it and found the cigg butt, why didn't you raise a stink with the dealer then?!?!
A cigg butt in the oil...that's a new one. I don't think you'll find a bigger 'red flag' than that. Was this a 'love is blind' situation? :bang:
My wife's 01 GT had a few issues when she bought it earlier this year (when I was out of town), and we had to fight with the dealer to get some things corrected (new FRPP rear suspension, new (legal) exhaust system, etc). And we also now know it was in a wreck of some sort (CarFax is useless, by the way). It's also taken some money on our part to get it where it is today, and we're happy now, but it wasn't easy. My 02 GT, on the other hand, was virgin, and this is what I'd recommend for people looking at used cars.

Yeah, I know I should have went back but I didn't. I'm pissed now, owner # 2 sold it because he wanted a truck. I think I'm going to try and get a hold of him and see what he says, I'll find out if he told the dealer about the motor, if he did. I'm going back and kicking someones butt.

But I've talked to about 3 of his buddies and they said he took really good care of it.
