I'm doing a I6 to 302 swap - got a C4 with a 164 tooth flywheel - better than the stock 130 something flywheel - but my shifter linkage is about 2-3 inches short - what did I do wrong or do I also need to relplace the linkage - and if so, does anyone have or sell a longer linkage?
Hi ScreaminMimi! Glad to see you're still workin' on it. There are a variety of C4's like there are apples. Do you have the tag off the driver's side servo cover? Anyway, if I remember correctly the gas pedal linkage is quite different between the 6 & 8 (needs to be replaced). The downshift rod is different. The shop manual has no dimension specs. for where things actuall sit, but I know the shifter itself is mounted on the tunnel and the rod to the tranny has about 3" worth of adjustment in it. Can you tell me (using a level maybe?) how far away from the firewall the back of the engine is? I can compare it with my I6 or maybe one of the others has a measurement for their V8? Sounds like you need the V8 shift rod, though.
to answer questions - the engine and tranny is from a 71 torino - and the engine isn't in yet due to motor mount issues - on my third set of mounts - oil pan still hits chassis brace - and engine is sitting back 5 inches from bellhousing - gonna try reversing the mounts - anyway, i agree with just getting a V8 linkage but some wags are telling me they are the same as the I6 - but i don't see how - and yes,i do need a throttle linkage - the one for the I6 was s shaped and wrapped around to the carb on the passenger side of the engine - my 302 with the Holley 650 has the throttleon the drivers side - so i need a cable or straight throttle linkage - BY THE WAY,speaking of cable linkages - do they make a cable shifter linkage???? do they work? hmm......let me know if you've heard or seen such an animal
Did the Torino have a clumn shift? If so, that is your problem. I think the part that mounts on the trans. is different for a clumn shift as opposed to a floor shifted car.
They do make a cable shift mechanism that comess with aftermarket shifters but I have no experience with them.
Hi! Have you compared the location of the crossmember mount for the transmission between the two? Measure from the engine mounting surface of the bellhousing back to the bolt hole for the mount. That tailshaft housing is probably different for the Torino.
well, i guess i'm a glutton for punishment - but the engine had been taken out of the torino and put in a truck - it was done with everything in one piece - the torino was floor shift - truck was column shift - the linkage however was an inbreed that was rigged on the truck, but would not work on my mustang - so i'm having to go from scratch - that's kinda why i was wondering about the cable linkage - solves all my linkage problems - my husband (a chevy man) keeps threatening to set my poor 'stang on fire cause its being so difficult - i'll post the results when i figure out what works - and yes, i'm wondering about the crossmember mount setting the tranny a few inches forward - i think i'll probably end up checking out cable linkages....thank you for your help - i will try all the measurement advice and see what i can come up with
News flash! Checking my 91 mustang manual, I found that some 5.0 automatics came with cable shift linkage! Time for a trip to the local salvage yard. If you're going new you need...
