Recently I have had an issue with my car stalling out and not wanting to start back up. The problem has gotten so bad that I'm at wits end and I am going to have it towed to my mechanic to see if he can help. One of the issues is that it may be the fuel pump starting to go. If thats the case I was thinking now might be a good time to have an after market fuel pump installed. So I have a few questions.

Is this wise? My engine is stock and I have a stock fuel pressure regulator. I know this basically won't do anything but I figure it will be a mod that will be there in the future when I do need it and since I will be having the fuel pump done I might as well upgrade right?

What should I look for? I want the ability to grow into this pump but I don't want to buy something thats too big for the car.

Thanks

Your aftermarket options are 155lph, 190lph, and 255lph. If your staying N/A then I would probably go with the 190lhp, 255lph with forced induction but both are about the same price. It's not a bad idea to get a FPR as the stockers can be off somewhat. With the larger pump the extra fuel will get sent back to the tank and the pump will have less strain on it when the demand is there.

I will vote for a 190lph. Excess flow should be able to run back to the tank.

Are you having the shop do the installation (assuming that's what the prob is)? Or just the diagnosing?

Forgot I had this info.

Ford EFI Options___80% of Max___80% of Max

110lph_____________240___________200

155lph_____________340___________280

190lph_____________420___________340

255lph_____________560___________460

These recommendations are based upon running at 80% of the pump capacity to improve the pumps reliability.

So, on second thought a 155lph could be just fine for you for a while.

If comfy wrenching, doing a pump is no biggie.

David (5spd GT) has a write up on doing one, IIRC. Might be worthwhile to search his posts and read up.

When doing a pump, getting a filler pipe-to-tank grommet is a good idea (20 bucks).

Pump suggestions are right on. A 190 should be plenty (stock on an '87 is 88 LPR IIRC) if doing bolt ons.

Good luck.

Probably going to have the shop do the diagnosing and possiably the install if the pump is the issue. I know the guys and they treat me well. Plus I don't have a spot I could do the change.

Any brand recommendations?

Walbro is oem and good stuff IMHO.
Half the 'other' brands out there are repackaged Walbros.

Good luck.
