High Volume Oil Pump on Stroker 393?

Is it necessary to use a high volume oil pump on a stroker 393? Would a standard volume Melling pump be safe? I have heard that you want to for sure stay away from high pressure pumps. Please help. Thanks.

A standard volume oil pump will be all you need in most cases in a normal build. It takes less HP to turn it and as a side benefit (when building a stroker) the smaller pump normally doesn't need clearanced in order to clear the crank.

BUT, if your rod and main clearances were assemble on the loose side (.003 or so) for a drag racing application, the a high volume pump and a higher capacity oil pump will be needed.

The only time you'll want a high volume pump is when the engine has been built with this in mind. I forget exactly how it's done (Larger bearing clearances?) but engine builders can enlarge some of the oiling passages to allow for increased oil flow to certain areas of the engine. Unless this has been done there is no need for a high volume pump.

Whatever pump you get..........blueprint it.....the new Mellings are about 11 pounds down from what they used to be and so are most of the other manufacturers too.

An engine built with higher loads and rpms in mind will have wider oil clearances and most likely will need a high volume pump.
