Hints for removal of Stock cat-back

I will be installing the magnaflow catback exhaust this weekend. I have the install instructions, but have yet to find anything an stock cat-back removal. Have helpfull hints, tools, ect.?

The only difficult or time consuming part of the install is cutting the stock pipes...after that it's pretty simple and straight forward!

I just installed a Magnaflow system last weekend. Get a sawzall if you can to cut the stock pipe off. Only took 30 seconds per pipe with a cordless sawzall. I did the whole install with the rear tires up on Rhino ramps. Only problem was that I could not get the new Magnaflow pipes over the rear axle. So I briefly jacked each side of the car up, under the body, to unload the suspension and create more room between the axle and car. The pipes then went right on over the axle. Also, get the muffler clamps tight or they will leak.

where do you cut off the stock pipe?

Just behind the rear axle....

I cut mine just before the pipe went over the rear axle.

Plus, as funny as it may sound, depending on the year and the condition your stock catback is in, you may want to put it on Ebay to get a little cash back. I got $100 out of mine. But it only had 800 miles on it and a V6 driver bought it to put duals on his car.

the install is straight up, anyone can figure out how it is done without a manual. if u have a good hacksaw with a sharp blade, u can hack that pipe off in a minute or 2. the rest is straight up.

You don't need to cut anything. The stock catback comes off just like the new one goes on. Why cut perfectly good pipes?

If you did it w/o cutting it....then your'e cooool. Cause my new one's went in in sections...

I have no idea how you did though, I must have twisted that thing in every possible position w/o luck..

yeah im not sure what stock cat back you have but mine was one piece I thought, I sold it to a v6 friend for like 40 I think. I bought a sawzall from home depot than returned it when finished. (put it on your credit card and its like you never even had to pay for it). just make sure to get your tips lined up right youll have to adjust it several times. I disconnected the shock on the passenger side axle to get the pipe over, than jacked the axle up when finished.

How do you know if you have a leak in your exhaust?

I started the car while the back end was still on the ramps and put my hand around all the connections (before the exhaust got hot) and felt for any air. I had several leaks at first so I went back over all the clamps with a 1/2 inch ratchet and tightened everything down good.

Also, if you don't get them tight the first time, they will shift around.

My pipes started vibrating, VERY loudly on the frame. I had to get some grade 5 lockwashers, washers, and nuts to solve that one.

Don't over tighten either, or you will deform the pipes like an oval. That is if you are using the U clamps.

Welding is the permanant solution, but then you can't adjust, or remove them.

Thanks for the help on the leaking question. When I get my cat-back next week I will check for leaks on my x-pipe than.

does anybody know the recomended torque value for the exhaust bolts?

Just unbolt your rear shocks and let the rearend come down some and the old pipes come right out!

Just unbolt them where they attach to the frame...

I second that. I got $125 + shipping on ebay for mine. Nothing like getting $125 for something I was considering cutting up to fit in my trash cans. Just cut the stock pipe in a location that will faciliate the use of pipe clamps to make the install easier for the V-6er installing them as an upgrade.

Use a little dish soap and water to lube them up...
