Would the super comps hang too low for 99% street duty in a 289 66/c4 auto. I am currently weighing the differences between the super comps/comps & headman long tubes to go with my Edelbrock Vr Jr heads. No I will be adding a 7 qt pan as well, probably the milodine that summit carries. Ground clearance and performance are the main issues I am concerned about. Is there any difference in ground clearance between the two hooker models?

The link below might help a little...maybe not but still good info there.

super comps and comps will have the same ground clearance as they share 99% of the same bends. Super comps are just made from thinner tubing and the collectors are angled slightly different. They both hang kinda low, not much of a problem though so long as you don't forget they're down there. Longtubes will give the best performance and sound, but since you say you'll do 99% street driving, I think you'd be happier with a mid length or shorty header based solely on fitment and ground clearance.

that being said, its hard to give recomendations in this case, especially regarding a 289 with ridiculous victor heads and a 7 qt pan (for 99% street driving no less). You don't need that stuff for a street car, heck, alot of racecars don't even need that stuff. Make up your mind on what you need, be realistic.

thanks for the replies,
Vr. Jr's rediculous, I dont know, they ran great for two years on a buddies 302 w/die ground pistions...not that I will assemble my engine that way. I will probably be using a new 331 rotating assy since I need new slugs to clear valves anyways. I have headman unequal length shorties right now but I figured they would kind of choke it in higher rpm's. I basically bought the top end off a buddy with a torker single plane manifold. I am going in stages, I did the 13" baer front disks and suspension over the past two years and am ready for the go part of the equation. It will get a new converter then a built c4 later along with some gears and posi.
Anyone have front end pics showing ground clearance?

is this a street car or a race car? Street 289 or hi revving 331? Plan on the hookers hanging about 2-2.5" lower than the front "framerail".

The Coke Challenge

Here is a pic of Accufab 1 3/4" headers on my 65':

A coke can is 4 7/8" high. I can still put a finger between the top of the can and the header. Note that the bellhousing is just as low. Total ground clearance is 5 1/4". I can't put a finger between the top of the collector and the floor pan cross brace (Transmission frame support.) Collectors are basicaly parallel with the floor. The bottom of the collectors are about an inch below the frame rail.

The engine is set as low as it will go in the bay using 65' motor mounts--just clears the idler arm in a full turn. Body has 1" shelby mod. New standard rate V8 front springs.

The lowest part of my car are the Caltrac bellcranks at 4 1/2". A coke can cannot slide under it. That is ok because I didn't build it for 4 wheeling. . . .

I have not hit bottom yet and I live where there are lots of RR crossings and the rural back roads that have small hills that make you go "Wwwweeeeeeeeeee."

thanks dennis...exactly what I was after...accufabs are tucked up there nicely and thats what i'm shopping for. Anyone running super comps that can compare height? I'm not looking to plunk down 600 only to watch them get smashed down running around pgh. BTW im just trying to get a stout street combo going, no slicks or track time, just looking to have the stang keep up with traffic (400 horse gto's). pump gas, no power adders, old school, 2-3k mi/year.

my super comps sat a tiny bit lower than my scatteshield. With cut front coils springs and a kyb shock they were only a problem over the big speed bumps. But with a drag shock and soft front spring they got beat up pretty bad durring normal sreet driving. Now I have stock front coils and alot more clearance but i dont drive the car as much as I use to.
Oh yea I also have the 65 engine frame mounts, the 66's sit the engine up higher, hooker reccomended these but you are good there.

If this car will be on the street then Vic Jr.'s are way too big. My Mach 1 is going to hit the street, but by no means is it a daily driver, the only way for me to take full advantage of those heads is with a huge cam, and it is not really a mild cam either. This is on a 351 by the way spinning to 7000+ rpms. Your car will have to be spun very high to make any worthwhile power with those heads, and to do that you will need lots of cam, and you can say bye to streetability. I would recommend something like the Performer RPM's or AFR 165's, a decent cam, with a Weiand Xcelerator intake and you will have some good power running through it.

I would advise against Vic Jr.'s on that engine.

ok, so it may be leaning toward the race end of the scale with the parts I have which is ok with me but it will rarely see track time (if ever). I will be trying out the stick that was included with my package deal ,Summit Duration 292/ 302, Lift .520/ .544 , 3,400-6,800 RPM. He had these heads and cam in a d/d ranger with no surging and only minor hard starting problems (hopefully msd dist will help), his biggest complant was the heat. Roller rockers were included and I will be building the bottom end to hit 7000 rpm's regularly and reliably. I have been on the past two Hot Rod Power Tours making the long haul both times with this car and am done with that kind of traffic without a/c...lol (had a blast b.t.w., pulled a 17 sec pass @ indy's IRP). Most of my cuizing will be local and in light traffic 2-3 days/week, 4-6 mo/yr. I cant stand my neon srt-4 being my "fast" car. I think long tubes are a must and am just trying to aviod low hangers. Thanks.

If your gonna run that turd cam in a vic Jr headed 289 then you dont need a supercomp header, look into the headman mid length headers and go with a 2.5 inch exhaust, you will have great performance with max ground clearance. If you step up the compression and get a big custom cam then the 289 engine can make use of a good long tube header with 3 inch pipes, and then it wont be daily driver it will be a street racer.
