Horrible Squeaking/Grinding noise from rear...

Hello everyone.

I have an annoying problem..

I have a Mustang 2002 GT, and the past month, there has been this LOUD squeaking and grinding sound from the rear of the car. It sounds kinda like when you press a brake that hasn't been replaced in years. That kind of squeaking. But instead of being temporary, or brief, the sound is ALWAYS there. If the car is moving, the sound is there. When i press brake, the sound is louder! Whenever i go over a bump in the road, a horrible grinding sound is heard from the rear.

I did the following:

-Replaced all of the car's suspension
-Replaced the brakes/brake pads
-Oiled and Greased every single joint they mechanic could find lol

The sound hasn't even changed. It is still there, and it is VERY annoying. It is so loud, the whole street hears it before i even get to them.

I went to many mechanics, and they all told me the Axle and Differential need to be replaced completely... the WHOLE Rear Axle.

This will cost me like 1000 dollars here...

Does this sound like it is the result of the Rear Axle and Differential?

Any insight would help me immensely, and probably save me money. I don't want to pay 1000 dollars lol...

Well i would have said a brake/brake pad issue but since those have been changed, it would almost have to be something inside the rear diff/axels as those are the only other moving parts in the rear of your car......a cheaper alternative to new is to try and find a rear end at a junk yard....of course you cannot be certain it is good until you get it in the car

Already went to the ONLY junkyard in the country, and they only had ONE axle lol. He wanted to sell it for 800 dollars without assembly... and if it doesn't work, another 100 dollars to remove it.. Wasn't going to take that risk lol. I'm not sure what to do anymore :/ I checked the differential oil, and it was fine. What could be making the horrid sound >.<

ahhhh did not see your location...that sucks....I am no expert but the brakes and the diff are the only things that spin when you move so it has to be one of those things....if the diff oil is good then it is probably an axle issue, or a bearing

Ugh >.< Owning a Mustang here is expensive But worth it! I don't regret buying it. I keep telling myself once the repairs are over, it will last if i take care of it. Thanks for the input in any case

Can you get the car up on a hoist (or even on stands)l, put it in 1st gear and let the wheels turn while you sniff around for the exact location of the sound?

Also, have you checked the rear axle fluid level lately?

Well, i can't because i don't have a garage to work with lol. But the Mechanic did. That is why he told me the whole Axle and Differential had to go and be replaced. I took his word for it :/ I don't know much about cars to be honest lol.

Rear Axle Fluid is fine according to a local garage.

If you can you should really get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. There are many possible sources for a noise like this in the rear end and it may only be, say, one particular bearing & race that needs replacing. Having that done would be a lot cheaper than replacing the entire rear...

I am planning on going to another garage later this week. If he also says Axle/Differential, etc, i guess it means what it means >.>

Personally, i am hoping it is just something to do with the brakes or something that can be fixed for like 200 dollars or something... not 1000! 0_o

Take it somewhere else. You can buy the parts (and upgrade them as well) and have it rebuilt for the same price or cheaper. The housings them selves rarely go bad.

flstang, parts in Kuwait are ridiculously expensive to buy new. Which is why i have to resort to repairing it, or getting it used. Since i cannot find a used axle, i need to have it repaired, which also costs a lot In any case, i will keep getting different opinions from different mechanics until i get a consensus on what is going on lol.

Get the rear tires off the ground at grab the tires and try to move them side to side and up and down. If there is alot of play there is your problem. I recently changed out both of my axles and bearing and seals for a little over two hundred dollors. A company called doremen make an axle replacement kit. I was going uprade the axles but wasn't sure if this was the problem. Autozone and advance auto here in the states sell them. Not sure about shipping though. I feel your pain. That noise will drive you nuts. Good luck and let us no how you make out.

I personally think that is also the problem fastback... I doubt the Differential is making this sound. The sounds are way to "exterior" sounding. And the fact that the sound gets louder when i press brake points along the axle/brake point. I think i will try replacing the axles without the differential and see what happens. I will update this thread if i get anything different lol.

Honestly the first thing that popped into my head when I read the original post was wheel bearings. Have you looked at the hub/bearing assembly?

I honestly have no idea what the Mechanic did lol. As i said, i am horribly inexperienced with cars All the mechanic told me was. REAR AXLE GOT TO GO... Literally

I'll tell you what mechanics dont do.... Re-grease caliper slide pins, turn or replace rotors that are slightly uneven. With that said make sure the rotors are smooth rubbing your finger from inside to outside. Craptastic pads with metal in them can make awful sounds too. I personally use Ceramic pads.

Mechanics here are mostly inept... Makes owning cars like this a risky endeavor. I will see what i can do about the caliper pins and rotors. Thanks for the heads up.

UPDATE!!

Finally... FINALLY!!

I found someone here that ships brand new Axles from the states for decent prices!! I am replacing the ENTIRE Rear axle (Brake pads included)

This should get rid of any sounds, and obviously, it is brand new, so warranty for me

The price for the brand new Axle with warranty, plus assembly and services will equal = 650 $

I am so happy T_T

I want to thank all of you here for your help btw

Hope my Mustang can find a place along with all of yours
