lately my car has a problem, it won't start when it's hot, like right off the highway. it sounds like the starter gives half a crank then gives up, then tries again, like it just won't turn over all the way. i assume because of the heat, it cranks fine when cold. i have headers on the car but i've had them for over a year and this problem is a month old, is the starter going bad?

First thing I suspect is battery. Stop by an AutoZone type place and have them put a load tester on the charging system (it's free). That will most likely tell you what's going on.

starter heat soak, cables overloading (when they are hot, they pass less current) and what Adam said all sound good to me.

good luck.

i had the identical problem...it would start just fine when cold but when it was fully warmed up...not a chance. I changed the started and put a heat-shield on the starter...because i have headers too and thats what everyone said to do. It didnt work. Basically it came down to the fact that the negative battery cable just wasnt doing it. So i replaced it and put a second ground (short one) from the terminal to the a/c bracket. problem solved!! its really easy to test....just hook up a temporary ground and test. hope this helps?! good luck
