How are the 99GT Automotic Transmissions???

How are the 1999 automatic transmissions (ex. 99GT) compared to the other year mustangs? I have had a 95 GT automatic to compare it to. Any improvements? Are the automatic transmissions still dogs?
 
My Auto is decent. I can't complain. I have always heard that the 99+ has a much better tranny than the previous years.

Just get you a converter and a stall...you'll be set.
 
How are the shifts in a 99+ Automatic? I had to put a TransGo shift kit in my 95 Automatic to even drive the thing. Can I live with the stock shifts in the 99+ Automatics?

Well, for me itd be better if the shifts were neck snapping quick but its alright stock. You can modify the valve body by doing a Jerry Mod to it. Quick shifts and all the goods.. best part its free :D
 
The 99-04 automatic GT's have the 4r70w automatic transmission. Its total standard gear ratio is 2.84:1 and the "w" in 4r70w means "wide banned". It is a solid transmission and can uphold to a great deal of power and abuse.

For a solid 4r70w transmission, I recommend the following upgrades:

Transmission cooler
Jerry mod shift kit or custom valve body
High stall torque converter(anything less than 2800rpm stall is a waste).
Custom tune or sport chip to set the shifts and line pressure for good performance.

Combine this with a set of 4.10 or 4.30 gears, you'll have a basically unbeatable drivetrain.

i don't know about them being able to take alot of power. my friend ran at the track like the 3rd time on a 100 shot in his 01 auto and it totally freaked up.
 
mine has been taking a beating for 3 and a half years already. at the track and on the street.. just that on the street i manually shift it when i race.

i even took it Auto Xing 2 times and i manually shifted during the whole 10 minute runs. so i thinkthat they're pretty strong. no signs of messing up, shifts fine at WOT, and transmission fluid hasn't been changed in 30k miles and it still looks new when i check it. oh.. and my car already has 78k miles. :nice:
 
I've been wondering this for a while (my last vehicle was an automatic with a B&M kit in it, loved it). How "daily driver friendly" is a high stall converter? I wanted to put one in my truck, but never did because I heard its no good for daily driving.

Did he have a good transmission cooler and did he keep the right transmission fluid in his car ? If not, then I may have found the problem. These auto transmissions cant take the heat. They must have a cooler to last. You must also keep at least Mercon V in the transmission and keep it changed no less than every 30k miles. I personally recommend 15-20k miles.
