how do i keep my terminals from corroding?

Grease is the answer to keep your current battery terminal from corrosion.

A sealed battery will not have these effects (as san~man mentioned), should you choose a higher-grade battery as a replacement in the future.

i don't know how true this is, but a guy i know once said if you pour some coca-cola on the terminal after you clean it i won't come back. i think that's pure BS though

and that coke is damn good.

I wish I asked this a few months back. my terminals got so bad, that the batter cable things snapped off. I bought cheap replacements from wallyworld for the time being, until I can replace the entire cable.

so silicone and dielectric grease, and a washer?

They are felt washers... Made out of felt. They usually sell them near the batteries.

And silicone dielectric grease should always be used on electrical mating surfaces such as battery terminals and spark plug boots. The grease conducts electricity, displaces water, and prevents oxidization by keeping air away from the metal surfaces.

I can tell you for sure on this one! First of all, get a terminal brush (cheap as dirt at auto store), some vaseline, and better terminal connectors. The reason I say better terminal connectors is because my stock ones got to where they would not make contact no matter how many times I cleaned them, so it always seemed like I had a dead battery .. pain in the ass. So clean the terminal connectors with coke or water, clean the terminals, dry them off, put a dab of vaseline on each terminal and coat em, you won't have any more problems at least for a long time!

Here's a pic of the termianal connectors I changed that stock **** to:

I also put a battery cutoff switch in so that I can kill my battery without having to disconnect the negative terminal. It is not intended for an alternator kill, just battery (in case anyone was wondering) ..

hope that helps :flag:

Just replace the whole setup with a dry-cell battery and gold plated terminals :nice:
