how hard is it to change the oil pan

thinging about changeing my oil pan in my driveway.. how hard is it? do i have to do more than just unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine?

yeah its a bit more involved than that. i would only do it if you have a serious problem with the pan gasket or something like that. you won't be able to get the engine jacked up high enough with the tranny attached to get the pan out.

you pretty much have to either pull the engine or unbold the front suspension to get to the pan

You'd be better off pulling it all the way out than laying on your back the whole time. I had to change an oil pump and driveshaft and wished I pulled it. You'll be glad you did.

well when I was putting in the T for the oil return.. I in my great wisdom I decided to weld it in.. Also in my great wisdom I didn't check the welders temp/amp from welding something thicker.. So I burned a hole in my pan, It's not leaking now cause i sealed it with some sealant that we have at work for the helocopters.. But it looks ugly...

so I bought a new oil pan with some and installed some very nice 8an fittings. Also I think the gasket is leaking, so i might as well do it all at the same time

I've changed out the pan gasket in my 90 before w/ the engine in the car and it was a PITA. Either pay someone or pull the engine - much easier either way.

The problem w/ doing it in car is you have to clear the oil pickup and snake it around the K-member... no fun.

would it not be easier to drop the K-member slightly than pulling the engine?

yeah.. but dropping the k-member is a PITA to tackle in your driveway

I had to do this and yes it was a pain. I used an engine hoist and loosened up the transmision mount bolts so that the transmision would have some movement. I then removed the exuast from the engine, radiator hoses, starter,intake, and removed the motor mount bolts. With the car on (4) jackstands, I hoisted the engine up until it hit the firewall. I then removed the oil pan bolts and was able reach into the pan enough to remove the oil pump and get it out of the way. I then remove the pan and got the new one in place. Next I reached into the oilpan and re-installed the oil pump. from here it's just getting it back togeter. My advice, HIRE IT DONE...
