How long should the stock clutch last?

Hey guys how long should my stock clutch last? I normally drive mildly with only a few agressive moments but by no means any more then what the car should be able to handle. I'm a fairly experienced driver with a 5 speed so I don't think im riding the clutch too much it just seems like it doesn't grab like it did when it was new (10 months ago). I even tried to adjust it just a touch to see if it would help and it appears to be adjusted as far as possible .

Is there any way of checking to see if i need a new one without paying for a shop who will most likely tell me that I need a new one to get the job?

BTW I got quoted 865 dollars plus tax from a trans shop for a HD clutch and install....too pricey for my pocketbook especially with wanting to get a used 03 Cobra next year (saving pennies)...


I was just thinking 14K from a new car was kinda fast for the clutch to **** the bed....

Mine lasted 12k miles. The way to check is to see if you can still get the car sideways in second gear, or does it just rev and not go anywhere?

Don't think that sideways in second is recommended with studded snows on lol....I could try it though might leave some sparks

I'm nearing 47k on mine, and with the 4.10's, I can still catch a nice 3rd gear chirp . But, 37k of those miles the car belonged to a chick, and I really don't think she was hard on it.

With agressive shifting it just seems to want to lag then go in a jerk type motion. Felt like it was slipping.....

Are you serious? 12k? my dad's escort lasted almost 80k!! it's 99k right now and it still hooks horribly fine

Damn i'm jealous. I need to stop racing so much. I put a king cobra from ford in my car lasted 6 months. I say about 4k and it went out. I power shift a lot. But that is good that you guys take care of your cars like that. Mine is always in the shop for something i broke.

No, the clutch is considered a "wear and tear" part so its not covered, kinda like tires, if you are always smoking the piss out of them, you void any kind of warranty out of them.

I've got 60K on the orginal clutch. It's still good, but I'm noticing more slipage lately. Time for a new one

I've got 73K on my original clutch and it's till going strong.
I never "ride the clutch out" launching at high rpms though.

I've got 45K on mine now and I only notice slippage after a lot of runs, it can fade a bit. The original in my 96 lasted 70K before it got a SPEC.

Mine last 43k before it exploded.(an old friend was driving the car without me, I have no idea what happened.)
My 94 lasted 142K drivin like I stole it!!!

I got the the Spec Stage II Treatment.

Mine started acting up at around 70,000 miles (it would start slightly slipping on long road trips), so I had it changed. The old clutch looked to have a reasonable amount of life left to it, but the flywheel was burned fairly bad.

Start the car, put the trans in 5th and try to move. If the car stalls, your clutch is still good. Yours may just be out of adjustment. When I adjust mine, I hear the "click" from the quadrant underneath the dash. Hope this helps.

i felt the same way about my car. I have 15000 on it. Mine seems to constantly ajust when i pull up on the pedal. Oh well. I tried the 5th gear thing and it does stall the car, so im not too worried.
