How many cats came on the 89 5.0?

thanks guys i will give the local DOT a call and find out what they say and then i will post what i have found to hopefully help out others who run into the same problem.

Mike does Bassani make that type of X pipe with cats, or does another company. thanks for any info.

All 86-93 5-liter systems have four cats on the stock H-pipe. Just downstream from the headers are the "light-off converters", which are three way converters (HC, CO, & NOx) constructed of a ceramic honeycomb coated with rhodium/platinum catalyst that begin operating at a lower temperature than the second pair of converters. The second pair of cats are again a ceramic honeycomb, but coated with platinum/palladium catalyst which further reduce HC & CO to acceptable levels. (According to Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference & Performance Handbook by Al Kirschenbaum)
I'm sure that during the intervening 15 years technology has improved to enable two cats to do what four did in 1989. There are many catted H and X pipes on the market today, not sure which are more effective than others.
Thank God I live in Arkansas! (No emissions testing or even inspections!) :D  :nice:

P.S.- Not sure on price of Bassani's, buddy bought whole cat-back for @$1200.

87 - thanks for even more detail on the 2 and 3 way cats. And you're right - the two ways are a thing of the past on newer cars - largely because the efi/injectors control the mixture even better than they used to so all the clean up can be done by a 3 way.

You sure you want to thank God for that? Here in Alabama, we give thanks for Arkansas on a daily basis because we don't have to be last in everything. :rlaugh:

Seriously, thanks for setting us straight. Yeah, it's nice not to be bothered by big brother down south. However, inspections are coming out part of the country sooner or later, so be prepared. I have a set of high-flow cats on mine because I'm a little bit of a green freak as well. It's responsible and keeps me from choking on the fumes. Just my .02.

No, no you got it all wrong- it's "Thank God for MISSISSIPPI!" :rlaugh:
