How much weight is too much for balancing?

I just got my brand new Magnum 500's balanced............and I am a little dissappointed:

Fricken while the rims are on balancer.....spinning....you can see the damn center section welds wobbling back and forth! Damn crappy QA if you ask me.

Any way one rim needed 1oz, two needed 2oz, and one needed 3oz to balance?!? Is this a lot of weight? Should I be concerned/pissed???? I realize that steel rims are way heavier than aluminum....but 3oz seems like a lot of weight.

I worked in a tire shop once and I never had to put that much weight on a rim...unless the weights were put on the inside only.

One thing I have done is to have the guy installing the tire rotate the tire on the rim. Both tires and rims are almost always out of balance. What this does is to set the weight on opposite sides to lower the overall out of balance. Some shops will do this for free, while others will ask for more money. Just mark the tire and rim and then rotate the tires a 1/4 turn at a time. Find the best comprise and then add weights.

Sorry,,,I forgot to mention that yes, I got them to put the weight on the inside only.

So what do you make of it? Is that too much weight?

3 oz on the inside only isn't too bad. It is about the max you want to have. Being you had all tires balanced on the inside (static balance) you will probably feel a slight vibration at higher speeds. A tire balanced on both sides (dynamic balance) will eliminate high end vibrations. I got rid of a set of alloy rims because I couldn't put weights on the outside of the rim.

These repro Magnums from Wheel Vintiques need to be lug-centric balanced, not hub-centric. It is hard to find a shop with the adapter, but it basically centers the wheels on the balancer using the lug holes rather than the center cone. The reason this is necessary is because with these two piece wheels, they never bothered to center the hub with the outside diameter of the rim.

If you find a shop that has the adapter, I know you will need a lot less weight. Remember to watch and make sure the guy doesn't use any centering cones on the back, just the adapter mounted on the front and the flat back of the balancer in back.

These wheels still aren't perfect, but you will be a lot happier.
