i want to clean out my engine bat tommorow how should i go about it???? any product reccomended??? how do you all clean your engine bays.???

There is a product in a spray can called "engine cleaner". Ide try using that first. Just spray it on liberally onto the engine surface, let it set for a minute or two, then hose it off. Follow this up with a clean old rag to wipe off any excess grease, oil, or what have you.

i used "gunk" degreaser... covered up all necessary parts....let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinsed off.... down side is that "gunk" stinks! it wears off after a couple of days.... ( really oily smell)

Since you have a 2003, it shouldn't be very dirty. I use Orange Blast cleaner. Just cover up the electrical components as needed and the airbox, spray the cleaner, wait a few minutes and rinse. If its pretty dirty, use the Gunk Citrus cleaner, it also works well, without the smell of regular gunk.

After the engine compartment is dry, hit it with some Stoner's Trim Shine for a showroom new look.

thanks for all the tips guys i have some gunk engine degreaser in front of me right now im going to give it a try tommorow for the first time since i got my car new engine bay hasen't been cleaned ever before it got 18,000 miles on it time for the first cleaning thats for sure.

Simple Green

Pop the hood and spray it on a cold engine. I spray it everywhere except the filter, MAF, alternator and battery. I'll let it stay on the engine while I get everything to wash the car 4-5 minutes. Then with a light spray/mist from the garden hose, rinse the engine off.
After that I will usually let the car idle while I give it a good wash, helps dry the engine bay.

Start the car and let it run about 5 mins so it will dry faster

Simple Green or tire foam. Then, after it dries I go over the rubber hoses and stuff w/ Son of a Gun. I wanna get it steamed cleaned this year, but i have no idea how to!

So basically.. just spray some Orange Blast or Tire Foam directly onto everything (except the cords, intake, battery) and then rinse off directly with regular garden hose or pressure hose? I wanted to clean my engine when it comes back from the shop and just want to make sure I don't screw anything up by getting anything wrong wet.. Then simply wipe off the cords and whatnot with some Armorall wipes or something? by the way.. What could the cords, air intake, and battery be covered with? Thanks guys.

I picked up one of those portable steamers for 100$. That and a bottle of simple green makes for a really clean engine bay.. The steamer works great on the rims too. The only drawback is that the tank on it is not that large so I work in sections to give it time to build pressure back up while i wipe it all down after a pass. Definately money well spent.

Just make sure you dont wet electrical components. My TPS went bad after I I cleaned my engine bay a few months ago. I got pretty wet.

Don't use that Castrol Super Clean, it's too strong. I used that once on my SVO when the engine was out of it and it took the paint off right down to the primer! I use Simple Green Automotive. I used to use Meguiars Extra cleaner but can't find that stuff anymore in the stores.

Hey guys, I have not cleaned my new motor yet. people say to cover the alternator, MAF, battery etc. what about the injectors and coil packs? What if those get wet? I'm always scared to clean my motor for the fear of SOMETHING shorting out.

Thanks for pointing that out...I messed up 2 of my coil packs because I neglected to cover them when cleaning out my engine with Gunk cleaner. Do NOT get water on the coil packs! They are very suceptible to moisture and can cause misfires when they mess up.

Speaking of getting the coil packs wet I just changed my spark plugs 2 days ago. The 1st and 3rd coilpacks on the drivers side where wet on the boot when I took them off and then where the spark plugs sit in the head it was filled up with water. Had to blow it all out before changing them. Who knows how long it was like that before finding it.

Oh and my motor gets a hand job cleaning every time it is washed as well as the exhaust with automotive simple green. Talk about anal. It gets washed about twice a week sometimes more.

HMMMMM, speaking of that, my 4th coil pack did take a crap with my old motor, after a couple times washing it, which caused a cylinder 4 misfire and my car ran like a sick DOG thanks

My car ran like crap after I sprayed the engine down last time. From now on I'm going to just use a wet rag. I had to let her sit for 2 days.

I covered alternator, filter, maf, tps, iac but I think the coil packs got wet.
