how to find out what stock rear-end

just wondering if any one could tell me how to tell what rear end i have in my 98 GT 5 speed i am no tthe origanal owner is there a letter in the vin or something like that

go on the freeway and see what RPM your at at 65 MPH and calculate it..

well there are 3 gear choices in that year & there are two ways..........
(2.73, 3.08, 3.27)

1) there should be a little metal tab hanging off the differential that should tell you, it will read 3L27, for a 3.27.

2) jack up the rear of your car & get a marker of some sort. make a mark on the inside of one of the tires, then make a mark on the drive shaft. after that watch how many times you can turn the driveshaft as the wheel makes one revolution. so if you turn the driveshaft 3 & "1/3" times or 3.27 to be exact, you have 3.27 gears. hope that made sense to you

Isn't it still written on the door label under AX??

M would mean standard 2.73's
I forget the codes for 3.08's and 3.27's but i beleive 5-spds got the options 3.08's and AODE's got the 3.27's optiona.

Wow...do you want to KNOW exactly what gears you have?

Jack up the rear, make a mark somewhere on a tire, make a mark somewhere on the driveshaft (make sure you can see both marks), rotate the tire 1 time only, while counting how many times the driveshaft rotates...if it makes 3 complete turns and about 1/4 more, you have 3:27 gears...get it?

or...you could just read the sticker on the drivers side door jamb and then look it up on my post above.

I know. No kidding especially if you get a car that obviously 100% factory stock. No need to break out the jack and tools. Just read the sticker.

Now if you bought a modded car, then you gotta count tire and driveshaft rotations

The guy said he's not the original owner. How the hell does he know what's in the housing by looking up the code?!?

You guys never cease to amaze me.

I'm not the original owner of my 2003, but i'm willing to bet the 38 year old mother of 4 who owned it before me wasn't exactly concerned with modding the rear end gears in her car.

That's why i said "obviously" stock in my post.

If you buy a car from an older married couple in their 50's, that never even cracked the hood open, then it's safe to say the gears are stock.

If you buy a car from a guy in his late 20's and see some tint, maybe new wheels and a cat-back, he may of changed the gears, but chances are more likely he didn't.

If you get the car from someone and it's sporting LT's catted mid-pipe and cat-back and shifter, plenum, cold air intake and more....then you have reason to think the gears were changed too.

I just think it's common sense. If i buy a used car and it's stock down to the silencer, why would someone change the gears??

I can't even beleive i need to explain this.

Whatever satisfies you guys...I NEED to know for sure what's in my rear end.

I bought my 'bone stock' 98 Cobra and after my normal 'I don't believe it until I see it for myself' inspection, guess what, It had 3:73s in it.

Like I said if you're too complacent or unconcerned about what you've got, then go ahed...assume it came 'bone stock'.

I hoped to teach a little something to the original poster that's all. He really shouldn't ASSUME anything.

But you guys seem to know all, so go ahead and NOT get to know every part of your car.

I meant NO offense to anyone. Please guys...don't be so defensive. We can ALL still learn new things, or at least hear other opinions here can't we?

I'm a dumb-a$$ too. But I know what I know. I know I, myself, can always learn something from anyone I meet.
