How to - MSD theft deterrent???

I was hoping someone had done it already. I was thinking about putting a toggle switch in the wire going from the MSD to the coil to stop the spark. And when the switch is "ON" the spark would go to the coil. Sounds like it would work, but not 100% sure.

There are 2 wires that come out of the msd box on the opposite side of the other bunch of wires. Its on the same side as the tach output. The two wires have a connector on them. One of the wires is violet. I don't remember the color of the other wire. This help any???

dont run your coil wires to a switch... theres waaay too much current running thru those for a switch. I think a cool idea is to run the ground wire thru the cigarette lighter... when its pushed in, the circuit is complete and the car runs... when the lighter is removed the car wont start... it keeps a stock look, rather than a switch that the theif MIGHT find and turn on... :nice:

I wouldn't be running my coil wires to a switch. I would be grounding the MSD via the violet wire that is noy being used. It is used if you are using a magnetic pickup. Which I am not. Atleast that is what I am understanding from what 88GThatchback said. When it is grounded, no spark. No starting. No stealing.

that right there sounds like you were going to put a switch in line with the wires from the MSD to the coil... which would be a bad idea.

later on in the thread you changed your story with the violet wire...

Yeah..at the beginning I was wondering how to do it. Didn't know exactly what to do. Thats why I was asking. Then 88gthatchback said what he had done with his MSD. According to the directions from MSD thats sounds right. I was just clarifying.

i am also interested for future reference the sig lighter thing is also a awesome idea how would you wire that up to kill the ground? once it is pushed in then it complete's the circuit and it runs? but if it comes loose then it stalls?

msd --- ground wire ---- wire --- cigarette lighter --- wire --- ground

pretty simple. once the lighter is pushed down its pretty hard to pull out... not ot mention if yers is worn out (stop smoking, DUH!) you can get replacements at autozone for like $5 and they're almost impossible to come loose...

if you ran the power wire thru the lighter, it would get hot... ground wires dont get hot. =)

Awesome Idea.

I remember seeing someone rig up a purge with the cigarette lighter. What do you do about it getting hot when its pushed down? Anyway to stop that or does it not matter? Thanks a lot

if you ran the positive wire from your msd thru it, it would get hot... ground wires dont get hot because they are the neutral conductor... think about it... your whole car is a ground... why doesnt it get hot and melt? =)

basically the positive wire goes to the "load", the energy is used, and returned to the "source" by the "neutral condutor" (ground) completing the circuit...

this completes today's lesson on DC power...

I didnt mean that. I am not an electrician or anything. So try to bear with me, just a 17 year old looking for a cool idea. But when you push the lighter down into it...it gets hot. After it gets so hot it automatically pops back up? What would have to do to stop this process? Thanks
