How to remove deposits on wheels?

I need help with some ideas here. I always take the wheels off my cars every oil change (5K miles, about 1.5 months) to clean the backsides and rotate them. Lately the rears have been building up with heavy deposits of crud that will not easily come off. I did wax them this spring but that did not help my current situation. Anyone else clean their wheels and have a method or product that works?

Picture of the deposits - this is 5,000 miles worth of regular summer driving - about six weeks.



I have tried scrubbing like hell with dish soap; also have tried tar and bug remover with no luck. I think it must be brake dust, it is like this on both the rear wheels, fronts looked similar but cleaned up (relatively) easily. Any help would be appreciated!

That looks like the inside of your wheels correct?

You have to remember that brake dust is highly corrosive plus add the fact that when it comes off it's usually hundreds of degrees hot too so the inside of your wheels will definitely get a beating and also why manufacturers don't bother painting and coating the inside of the wheels.

I'm afraid that nothing short of sanding the inside down and repainting it will take care of that.

Yeah, that is the inside.

You are right about the inside of these wheels (polished 18's) not being "finished". My stock (silver bullitt 17's) are painted and I was able to EASILY wipe them clean in the spring after driving all winter on them. Guess many I will have to live with it?

Use some Meguiars APC/+ or Simple Green with a stiff bristled brush.

Yes, as long as the other finish on the outside is durable enough to withstand the oven baking part.
