Howling noise comming from rearend/driveshaft area.

Hey,

I just grabed a 1994 Mustang GT, that was built up a bit.

When I'm driving WITHOUT my foot on the gas, I hear a loud howling noise that sounds like its comming from the rearend or possibly around the driveshaft.

As soon as I touch the gas peddle the noise goes away, only happens when I take my foot off the gas.

The car had a bunch of engine, suspension, and rearend workdone a couple months ago. One of the installs was 3.55 FMS gears. Is it the gears or the driveshaft? Or something else?

Sounds like the pattern on the coast side of the gears is not right. They will whine on decel in that situation. Because the gears wear together though, it's not likely it can be fixed by simply setting them up again to correct specs with the right pattern. Some people have gotten it to work fine by setting them up again, a lot more haven't. New gears installed correctly is more than likely what you'll have to do.

Thanks for the info.

Okay if it is the gears how bad is it to be driving around the car like that? Don't get me wrong Im going to fix it ASAP, but wont be able to until Monday. And I was supposed to go to the Street Legal Drag Races tonight.

Is it okay to drive?

It should be OK to drive like that for a while... I mean a lot of guys have some level of gear noise...

your rear end is not going to explode or anything. If your getting it fixed monday then you should be fine through the weekend

Yeah I've beat the piss out of a rear end that whined on decel for over a year. Eventually it takes its toll but like said, it's not going to blow up or anything.

Gear whine Indeed. I have had the whine since I installed them back in Jan. I daily drive it too But my exhuast drowns it out. The only problem I have now is that Its starting to whine on acceleration. SO I have to replace them within the month. The only problem is that The 3.55 Ford racing gears are on a big back order, and summit and jegs have removed them from the internet catolauge . So I might have to wait a little longer.

If you do change gears, make sure the tech or mechanic runs a pattern on the gears you have first. No sense changing out your current set up if you don't have to. But I think Sublime R/T is correct, gears are not set up correctly on the coast side, would cause a howling letting off the gas.

The growling and hollowing coming from my old 95 GT was a bad carrier bearing. I had them put a whole new bearing kit in it and it went away.

I like to stick with the Ford gears because its easier to get the pinion depth and backlash correct.
