The formula is rear wheel hp = weight x (trap speed/234)^3. Therefore, the higher the weight, the more the hp. 3000 lbs may be too high for a '65, maybe not. Flywheel hp = rear wheel hp/.80 for an automatic, hp/.83 for a stick.

Is it just me or are these calculators whacked? Is asks for h.p. and weight. A 200 h.p. car w/300 lb. ft. of torque will be faster than the same weight 200 h.p. car w/ 250 lb. ft. of torque, so how can it be accurate?

What exactly is trap speed?

I think the answer is, yes, the hp-based ET calculators are whacked. They will generally tell you that the same hp that will achieve a 102-103 trap speed will also give you a 12.99 ET. The truth at the track is, only if you get a monster hook is a low 100's trap going to be good enough for 12's. The ET-based hp calculators are whacked too, for the same reason. A lot more goes into ET than hp and weight.

On the other hand, the trap speed-based hp calculators tend to be pretty close. Somewhere there's a web site that explains the physics behind the formula, rwhp = trap speed x (weight/234)^3. But even so, the formula assumes a constant rate of acceleration, which is impossible to achieve in real life. But it's not impossible to get close. That's why the formula works as a guesstimator.

Editorial comment: with the proliferation of Dynojets and similar chassis dynos, people are getting much too obsessed with their hp output. A dyno is useful for tuning, but so is trap speed at the track. IMHO it's a waste of money if all you want is to get a number to brag about.

I couldn't agree w/you more!! It's just a tool, a good one at that, but it doesn't tell you what's king... ET baby! When I had a custom cam by Ed Curtis I talked about HP. He stopped me and asked what was my ET goal. He said he could grind a dyno queen or an ET king... went w/the ET king.

Tune at the track. One item at a time. Let the ET tell you which way to go and when to stop.

65notch, next time you go to the track PM me. I wouldn't mind tagging along and helping you out if you needed it. Speedworld isn't that far from my house (20min)... plus would be nice to meet you & check out your ride.
