hp from explorer setups?

I don't know about the rules now, but when these were done.........NMRA did not allow any porting. 58.5cc chambers, the valve seat depths are optimized, max valve sizes (1.85 & 1.55) are used, undercut stems are used, A good 3 0r 5 angle valve job (didn't ask which of Troy) and then the valve spring heights are also set correctly. Comp Cams springs, Titanium keepers, Isky guides and studs. I guess a "blueprinted" head would be a correct description.
 
On the setup, I have GT40Ps with valve work, Exploder intake, E cam, 1.7 rockers, U/D pullies, MAF conversion, stock MAF and TB, full 2.5" O/R exhaust, and some other little things, and I planted 258 RWHP untuned. It's a great budget setup, but I highly recommend having the heads worked, I wish I had. I am going to supercharge soon, and I've added some other mods, so take a look at the link in the sig to see everything I have now.
 
astronut - we have very similar setups, but I don't have the E cam (stock 87 cam) or the 1.72 rockers (mine are 1.6) and we made 1HP difference on our untuned first dyno. My car made 309RWTQ though.
 
My MAF and TB are choking the crap out of my motor, my timing was 22*BTDC, and my fuel ratio was 12:1. My car wasn't even close to running good. I'm probably getting a blower soon, so I'll be taking care of the inadequacies.
 
Hey Tmoss, what cam are you running in your setup? I have an 86 that I am building and keeping SD, and those numbers are very respectable.
I would like something similar, have a 99 explorer intake, lower is ported a tiny bit and 95 gt-40's. I have a couple cams at my disposal.

You will have to measure each cam installed with the degree wheel. It will take some time, but it will allow you to choose the best cam AND find the best installed ICL.

My 88 cam measurements:
Measured @ .050" IVO-4°ATDC, IVC-43°ABDC, Duration-219° EVO-43.5°BBDC, EVC-11°BTDC, Duration-212.5° Overlap was -9° Installed at 108.5 ICL

Thanks for the useful info. :nice: Was that for the 87 cam, 88 cam or 88 cam with a typo? :shrug: I figured you had one of the early 87 "race" cams!! I'm curious if the 86 cams are of the healthier grind than the later cams.
