HX/HY35s are nice and all, but what about H1Es?

The HX/HY35/HE351 Holsets seem to be the bee's knees with a number of smller displacement engines like our 2.3s, Mitsubishi 4G63s, etc.

However, what about the step above that? I'm still enjoying the euphoria from getting a "mystery" H1E for far less than the HX35 going price. It's in spanking shape with minimal radial play and zero thrust play.

I know of one person on turboford using an HX40 on a 2.5L Ranger, but he's the only one. Is onyone here using one or know of some other head case ;) that's running a big hairdryer like this?

Yeah, that's something I dug up in my research on this latest one. Same as the H1E being predecessor to the HX40. However, after more searching, I'm not sure that I don't have an HX40. I saw some mention that H1Es never had wastegated housings, but the HXs do. Mine has a wategated 17cm twin scroll and a 58mm compressor inducer.

Anyway, I actually doubt anyone on stangnet is using one on a 2.3, but I had to ask. The Mitsubishi crowd seems to like the 35s and the 40/35 hybrids, so I don't see why a heavy breathing or Volvo headed 2.3 couldn't use one.

Yeah, I saw an in-car video of someone's Holset-equipped 2.3 notch on the 2-step. Took about 1 second for the boost gage to nail 15psi. :nice:

I think the HX40's bigger T4 flange and housing should be good for much lower backpressure and hopefully from that, more power. It will be laggy as heck, but once it spools that's not an issue. I haven't seen any info on the boost:backpressure ratios for HX/HY35/HE351s on our 2.3s. I have seen that the stock T3s and IHIs usually have 2:1 exhaust/intake ratios. Not that great.

so you have the 351 on your 2.3? my dad got one that he was going to put on his spirit but is second guessing his decision and i may be able to take it off of his hands, i just dont want to go from the garrett to the holset and get a whole lot of lag. i can deal with a couple seconds, though.

yes they made a wastegated H1E it would be the WH1E. There is even one forsale on EBAY. The last time I was at the truck salvage yard there where a few WH1C and WH1E turbos. I may pick a couple of them up next time.
