About two weeks ago my car started to make this wobbling sound that was in relation to RPMs. I stopped driving it for a week until yesterday, I went to the mall and after was going to take it to my friend's shop to try and fix it. On the way out of the mall the sound was getting louder so I decided to find out if it was a problem or just an annoying sound. Gave it a little gas in first and snap...a loud metallic snap/pop sound. I coasted back into the lot and shut the engine off and waited a second to think about what happened. I turned the key and the engine started ok and sounded fine. I had normal clutch feel and was able to put the car in gear, but when I let off the clutch and gave it gas and it didn't move. I looked under the car and the driveshaft looked fine, so I'll thinking something around clutch, maybe the throw-out bearing? Any ideas on what I did? I'll find out more next Saturday when I go over to my friend's shop where it got towed to and drop the trans. Just would like to have an idea going into next Saturday.

Thanks
Dave

ok one of 2 things could have happened. 1 your clutch went south for the winter and isnt coming back. but you say you have normal clutch feel. 2. you just snapped your spider gears in your diff. pull your rear diff cover and i bet you will find spider gears all over the place. let us know what happens.

If I snapped the spider gears, then when I put the car in gear and try to drive away, the driveshaft will rotate but the car won't move, right?

Oh and I tried putting the car in reverse and backing up right after it happened and I heard a loud metallic rattling or grinding sound.

I hope it is in the rear though because I was originally thinking about doing a 31 spline diff upgrade with superior axels, so this would be the perfect time to do it.

Any other ideas? thanks

correct the clutch will do what its suppose to do but the power to the rear wont go anywhere cause the spiders a destroyed. my dad did that in his 84 capri. he had a 7.5 in rear end with a set of 4.10 gears and snapped the rear like a toothpick. it was a loud snap too. oh well we just upgraded to a 8.8 with a set of 4.10s and went on our merry way.

Before even reading the rest of your problem I went striaght to the rear end. I'd say its a spider gear or something else happened in your diffy. Especially if it was a wobble feel before it popped. Your throw out bearing or anything in the clutch won't do that. It'll only squeel.

Alright thanks guys, tomorrow I'm gonna go over the shop and have someone get under the car and see if the driveshaft spins. If it does I guess I'm gonna have to start to reseach my rear rebuild, so I'll probably have another thread started tomorrow sometime.

BTW I'm kinda happy this happened cause now it forces me to do the rear upgrade which I was putting off, and find a daily driver car. Hopefully there will be something good in Sunday's paper.

Went over to the shop today and had someone look under the car. The driveshaft is rotating, just not the whole thing. It snapped the rear U-joints. So Tuesday I'll go back over, get the driveshaft out and take it to a shop to have them replaced. This fortunately will be a lot cheaper than redoing the whole rear.

u should just get an aluminum driveshaft, weighs alot less and the u joints are heavy duty.
