This sucks

Ive known my cowl leaked, when it would rain real hard, the carpet by my left foot would get a little wet

Well....about 2 months ago the trannie died and as sad as it is...the mustang got parked for a lil bit and i was riding my ninja alot (sorry Mr. Stang)

Well...today i decided no more, i was going to get it running, i just soled my bike and had some cash so i was going to build the 408....rebuild the trans and get em back on the road....well last month when i took my nitrous kit off i peeled back the carpet to get to the lines so i could take them out. and basicly today i went to go move the car to the back and when i stuck my head inside to put it in neutral i could see daylight right where the floorboard meets the corner at the left foot...and when i REALLy peeled the carpet back my heart sunk....i could probably fit a leg through there and flinstone style the damn car around

So tomorrow im gutting the interior and im pulling the old motor and trans so i can get to the cowl. I need to fix this rust so im going to do it all myself...my buddy knows how to weld and has done a few resto's so thats not a problem..but can anyone give me any pointers or key areas to check for?

if MOST the floor is rusted i would rather replace it all at once, i noticed in NPD that they had a COMPLETE floor for the 70's...is this easier then doing it panal by panal?

Also RIGHT underneath the driver side quater windo its rusted through...id this something that would be replaced with a new fender>? Ill snap some pics for you all tomorrow when i rip the rest of the carpet up

Check your air vent.

I have a 70 coupe that had the same problem. Don't automatically assume it's your cowl thats leaking. I made that mistake. I was doing all kinds of stuff to fab up one of those clear cowl vent covers for a temporary fix only to find out that it wasn't my cowl at all that was leaking. It was actually the lower vent. Our lower vent has some type of thick seal thats supposed to stop water leakage, but mine obviously failed miserably! Anyway after bustin' some rust', I ended up using silicone to seal the vent back up b/c I couldn't find anybody who sold that seal. No problems since. Good luck.

Well thanks for the words of wisdom, that would make me mad lol

but last time i had the dash out..i THINK i could see the rust, and exactly where it was coming down too (is this possible)

Oh yeah, that's definitely possible. We are lucky because we have removeable cowls. What I would do if I were you is remove the cowl cover and visually inspect the area. If you don't see anything, get out the water hose! That's the best way to know if the leakage is coming from your cowl and find out if there are any other potential leaks as well. Getting that carpet out of the way will help too.

Well when i get off of work today im going to start gutting the interior...taking the seats and carpet out....and i guess ill take thedash out too....how do i remove the cowl?

Does it just "pop" off or are the bolts.

My problem (69 Coupe) was all the lower vent as well. Cowl vent was just fine but the lowers are mangled.

Allright so a couple of quick questions

How hard is the firewall to replace.

And also what about the truck floor?

Also...ill be doing all cutting/welding in my back driveway...

Is this possible to do? lol Like...i wont need a lift or anything will i?

i know on a 65/66 mustang you need to drill out all the tack welds . . over 100 of them. and you need to remove hood/fenders/window and sometimes the engine to get at them

then use a pry bar and gently take off the rop cowl panel

THEN you need to chop out the rusted area and weld new hats in.

i'm not sure on a 70 mustang thought . . . but i know on the 1970 mach 1 the cowl vent is covered by the hood

it's about 20+ hours of work

Well the motor and trans are coming out friday so im not worried about that.

When you say "drill out the tack welds" do i just use a drill and the right drill bit? What do these tack welds look like?

And how the hell do i get the damn wiper arms off hahahahahahaha

I apoligize....there will be ALOT of questions from my end for the next couple months, body work is something new to me

Damn dood, I'm sorry to hear about that. I remember when I found out my car had cancer. Its all over my floor pans too. I feel your pain. I've had my floor pans ofr a year and a 1/2, havn't had any time to put them in. Wont even be able to work on my car until things settle down with this new house =-(

You do not have to drill any tack welds. Your car should have quite a few phillips screws or plain old nut-driver type screws holding your cowl on. To get the wiper off, there should be a little "dohicky" (I don't know what you call it, but it looks like a little tab) that you pry down from the base of the wiper. Pain in the rear! After you pop that tab down, they should pop off.(the never do , but that's all to it).

well as i said, that's how it's done on a 65/66 mustang.

the 70 has the cowl under the hood, so the top mes/vent panel thing should be bolt on
