just got a 5.0 not too long ago ... i need some mod ideas ... gears and other options ... i was thinking 4:10s but heard i should go with 3:73s ... what else should i do. im new to the board and kinda new to the performance world...if you have any suggestions i would appreciate it.

3.73's seem to be the more popular gear.

My car has 4.10's and I think its a little much... 3K rpm at 70mph...

Just browse the forums and you will find asweres for almost anything.

alot of people recomend 4.10 for autos and 3.73 for stick but personally i would not go more than a 3.73 if you do any freeway or interstate driving at all. 4.10's are ok for a drag car or such, first off a drag car with usually larger tires makes the gears act more like a 3.73 anyway. but for anything driven daily or cruised 3.73 is probably the better gear with 3.55 being ideal if you wanna drive long distances at 75 or 80 mph like the rest of the free world does. i put 3,73 in mine and am glad i did not do 4.10.

Welcome to Stangnet!

Your first mods should be as follows (my take):

In order of Priority
1) Subframe connectors (SFC's) full lenght or short
2) Gears: 3.73:1 or 4.10:1 seem to be the popular choices
3) Buy a K&N panel filter (no CAI kit required) and put it in the stock box
4) Exhuast (headers, hi-flo cats, mufflers)
5) 3G alt upgrade / electric fan

After those, it's pretty much up to you. There are plenty of Super Chargers or Heads, Cam and Intake packages to choose from.

Also, don't forget about the basic tune up which should include:
1) Changing all of the fluids (oil, coolant, trans, rear end, brake and some of the power steering)
2) Plugs: (non-platnum type) Autolite or Motorcraft
3) Oil filter: Motorcraft or equivalent (not FRAM)
4) Air filter: see above
5) Plug wires: Ford Motorsport (FRPP) 9mm units are great
6) Cap / Rotor
7) Oxygen sensors

I would pretty much agree with those, but I would also add a short throw shifter to the mods above. Steeda Tri Ax and Pro 5.0 are generally the favorites (many threads about that, so run a search). Also, the newer MGW has gained quite a bit of popularity (many threads about that as well - search).

In addition to the maintanence part, you might as well replace your radiator hoses and battery cables too if you're not sure when they were done last.

Thanks guys, truuth doesn't get to get on here much so I'll send his thanks. I have a question about some body work on his car though. He's getting some pretty bad rust behind the back tires. Would the best way to fix this is the cut/weld method or what? It's that close to being well past the putty stage. This is a LX and has the hatch. Thanks

Paul or one of our other resident body folk will probably be the better ones to answer but I belive the only way to truely get rid or rust is to replace the offending area with new metal.

Thats what I thought. Would that mean replacing the entire back end? Cause its all connected. (I'm not that familliar with Fox Bodies)

No... A good body man / shop should be able to cut out and create a matching patch for the small area the needs some attention.

There is also a product called POR15 (Paint over rust) that you can put on areas that are not visible.

Look at the floor pans and bottoms of the doors for rust also.
