I'm new here and this is my first post. I apologize if I'm in a wrong forum. I just wanted to say that yesterday I bought a new 06 gt auto. I know what most of you are going to say, and I also wanted a stick since that's all i have drove for the last 15 years being a driver, but the only reason I went with the auto was because I got better deal on it since it was one of the last of the 06's and all that the dealer had left was autos. Otherwise if I wanted stick I would have to pay $3,800 for the '07 because of the less rebate and higher APR. What do you guys think? Did I make a good choice by going with the auto? What is the actual performance difference in 0-60 and 1/4 mile between the two. I appreciate all the answers. BTW it's blasck with black leather and 18" wheels.
Thanks

Congrats on the new car!

I have a 2006 Mustang GT with automatic transmission, too. I love it! The only funky thing about the auto is the throttle lag.... there's a brief hesitation from when you press the accelerator to when you actually get going. Drives me nuts!

But you can fix it with an aftermarket tune. Something I'll be doing in a few months or so.

This will probably get moved to the 05+ talk section... But congratulations on the car. The Autos are not horrible anymore - just a tab bit slower than the manual, but not enough to notice by most people.

Also, welcome to :SNSign:

The 5R55S is not as heavy duty a trans as the 470R was, the jury is out as to how they will hold up to tunes with harder shift points and horsepower adds. Mine is currently being torn out so they can put silicone goop in it to fix a leak that is common with these trans, and my car started leaking at only 1k miles on the odo. I have a feeling these trans will start dropping out with various tunes after they get some miles and races on them. Ford has them with a "soft shift" setup in the OBD II, the SCT and Diablo tuners remove this and boost the shift pressures for harder shifts. Ford knew these trans were not heavy duty and thats why the programming and the soft shift points. These trans are also susceptible to rpm flare because they are synchronous. Thats the deal.

When I burn out my AUTO, I'll drop in a 6 speed.

Thing is the manual tranny is these new Stangs is fairly poo-poo as well. I've driven and ridden in both and prefer the autos...for now...stock-V-stock.

Buy them and have someone install them.

I too have an '06 auto, not sure how I really feel about it yet. I recognize that is it very soft shifting - something I'm not used to after driving an '87 LX with AOD and a hard hitting shift kit.

Not sure how you all drive the automatics tho, I have nothing but success with them. Leave it in drive (D) until your get to about 50mph then shift into OD - doesn't where out your overdrive band. Have had 2 autos, 1 in my F-150 and the one in my LX last well over 200k by doing this (and beating on it that hard either)

I leave my OD off until I get on the interstate or cruising at 55+ on any other road. I can see the soft shifts for part throttle, but even does it at WOT. I've read on here the tunes take care of that.

Welcome!

Isn't the 5R55S also used in the V6 Mustang? That doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in its durability. The 4R70W was used in the Crown Vics, Mustang GTs (2V), and the E-series w/ the 5.4L 2V V8 (260 hp / 350 ft-lb of torque) along with the Marauder (300hp/302 ft-lb).
