I have a clatter noise at idle

s the subject to this thread states, I have a clatter noise at Idle. I have discovered that it is coming from the fly wheel/torque converter area. I just bought the car and know the transmission has been swapped out, but don’t know with what, or what the torque converter stall is(if that makes any difference) Does any one have an Idea as where to get started. My Idea is that the fly wheel is either cracked or loose, but I could be wrong. Any Ideas what to check next or where to get started? O by the way the noise goes away when I put the car in gear, or Idle up the engine.

Check your flywheel to torque convertor bolts they can come loose and hit causing your rattle

first step is to pull the tranny. with that flexplate or tourqe converter loose it can only mean bad things for the tranny tc and flexplate. ie oblonged holes for mounting the tc to the flexplate oblonged flexplate to crank holes. damaged front seal damaged front pump. I would take the tranny out asap and do a thorough inspection before running it anymore. better to do it now than have the car break down ont eh side of the road.

The flexplate also could be cracked around the attaching bolts-kind of a common problem.

First off, don't take it apart, check to see if the counterweight on the flexplate is rubbing the block to bellhousing spacer plate.Also rotate the crank slowly and see if all 4 of the nuts that attach the converter to the flexplate are in place and tight. If it's not that then you can go to the next step and remove the transmission to see if you have loose bolts or a cracked flexplate.

if the counterweight was rubbingor the converter nuts loose i would still pull the transmission to look everything over. with any of these problems your bound to pull the transmission anyways.

I've had the counterweight rub the flexplate on a C-4 once, and all it took to correct it was to bend the block plate a bit. I did end up loosing the C-4 but it wasn't due to the rubbing episode.

I wanted to update you all, I got the car up on ramps today, looked at the fly wheel, and all the bolts. As it turned out one of the bolts was just a little and I mean a little loose. Cranked it down, and started it up. no more noise. Thanks for all the help.
