I know this is a dumb question (5.0 engines)

But what difference is there between an 87-93 5.0 and a 94-95 5.0 engine? visibly? how would i be able to tell, exactly? where are the numbers located on the block so i can check them out? is there anything i could look for visibly that would differentiate? i'm simply not familiar with the 94 95 5.0's.

Biggest visible differance on stock 94-95 is the elbow on the throttle body. Then again it someone swaps it out to a fox tb thats shot. Ill let someone else respond on the casting number part.

well the reason why i ask is because apparently there is not a direct swap between a 94-95 t5 and a 79-93 t5 because the input shafts on the 94-95 was longer or something....

The wheelbase is slightly longer on the SN95 models, so the input shaft on the T-5 was increased by 5/8" in order to use the same driveshaft and place the shifter within better reach of the driver. The SN95 shortblock is essentially the same as its Fox counterparts, but starting in 93, Ford switched to hypereutectic pistons.

The input shafts are different. You just have to make sure you use th bell housing from a 94-95 trans for a 94-95 T5. You CAN NOT mix and match the two. As long as you have the correct bell for the correct trans, you will be fine.

Also, up untill 90-91 (cant remember) the engines had forged pistons, after that they were hyperutectic.

Don't think the SN95's had the same valve covers either. Stamped steel vs cast aluminum on the Fox's.

Truth. The stamped steel covers also have the oil fill in a little different place.

And they are black, not grey.

now, how would i be able to identify the bell housing? would the bell housing cooperate with the tranny or would it just not happen? i don't really know how it works... what are the symptoms of a mixed and matched bellhousing/tranny?

it had a borg warner non wc t5 in it before i got to it... it shifted fine... when i put the new tranny in, it became a bitch to shift and to put into gear.. i was told that it sounds like the cable assembly... the shop who installed it blamed the pressure plate, although i sent it to ford racing and ford tested it and said everything was fine... so now i'm trying to hunt down the problem, ya know?

headers are different, at least there is a port for the egr on the pass side. The intake manifold is casted differently, vc's, the accesories, throttle body, maf, computer, bell housing, trans ( the best t5 in my eyes from a stock stang)

what are the symptoms of a mixed and matched bellhousing/tranny?

the trans wont bolt up all the way.

alot of crap is different (better) on the sn95 cars..

+1, the upper intake manifold was shorter than the previous cars' to account for the lower hood line. Not that that affects your transmission issues.

Other differences - Water pump, both front acessory brackets, alternator, smog pump, a/c compressor and power steering pump. The 94 -95 has an electric cooling fan. The hard cooling lines that mount to the lower intake are different. The location of the air temperature sensor is difference. Tge distributor is different. The basic long block is the same.

so would it have been possible for a shop to unknowingly install a mixed matched tranny and bellhousing? or would something have clearly been wrong?

The vin # is on the passenger side by the starter you have to turn the block upside down to see it and you can install a fox trans on a SN95 i've done it on my 95. Or you can also buy the drive shaft spacer i also did that. The WC t-5 is way stronger found in i beleive 85 and up 5.0's. valve covers pistons all acc. T.B and some foxes were S/D not MAS air, also the S/N 95's had diffrent air boxes and bigger T.B and MAF's i think? peace.

i didnt notice anyone mentioning it but the waterpump on the 94-95 is the easiest way to visually tell the difference. along with the front accessory drive is different too.
