It called "Varible Displacement Technology" or VDT for short. Chrysler is going to be using it on the Hemi Magnum wagon. It allows the engine to switch from 8 cylinders to say 6 cylinders. Conserving gas and adding up to 7 mpg.

I was at the Cleveland Auto Show and GM had an engine dyno there showing off their new technology - Direct Dispalcement which runs on 4 cylinders until the demand is there it switches to all 8 cylinders.
Supposedly the new 5.7L chrysler hemi was supposed to do this. I dont know if it made it to the final version of the engine but i do know it was implemented in the test pickup truck that the 5.7L hemi first was revealed in. It was all electronically controlled and was supposed to drastically improve fuel economy. Somehow i dont think it made it into the production engines because the fuel economy for the trucks is no better than the anchient and far from efficient 5.2/5.9 L engines.

wouldnt just putting a 4 cylinder & a turbo with a boost dial on the dash in a car do the same thing?
or how about 4 cylinders with superchargers that had some kind of a electric clutch type engagement (kinda like an air conditioner pulley) that engaged with a flip of a switch.

I know gas is expensive now buy still . Its a Mustang! If you want to conserve gas or be good to the environment, buy another car lol. Im not trying to be rude, but it just doesnt make sense. Even if the technology is out there, these are Mustangs people!!! Lets say Ford does it, and we now have Mustangs that vary from 4-8 cylinders. You decide to mod the car, oh well you cant, a chip hasnt been developed yet that will allow the comp to compensate for the mod on 4 cylinders or 8 cylinders. Not to mention the price of something like that if it did get developed. I may be way off, but not my cup of tea... no sir...
