I want overdrive!!How do i get it?

Ive got a 65 coupe with a C4. The 3rd is annoying on the high way.I would like to put in a 4-5 speed.Preferably a 5.My buddy just pulled his motor out of his 86 Bronco and isnt gonns use his tranny.Im pretty sure its a C6 but no positive.Isnt a C6 a 3 speed also?What tranny from what vehicle would be best to put in it.I dont want a manual.Any ideas?

you are probably looking for an aod, but i am unsure as to what year/vehicles are best for doing the swap...

I also have a 65 coupe with a C4. Just curious when you say annoying at highway speeds what are you referring to? At 70 mine is quite,smooth and turning less than 3000 r.p.m.Not trying to discourage you from swapping trannys just wondering what the problem might be. I have a 280 rear end which helps alot on the highway.

It sounds like you want to stay with an automatic, right? If so, the most common (and probably best) choice is a late model AOD (Ford's automatic overdrive). This is a 4 speed overdrive transmission. The first 3 gears have similar ratios to your current C4, but the overdrive gear is .67, thus dropping your cruise rpm by 1/3 compared to the C4. This is a fairly easy swap as parts are readily available for swapping an AOD and there is tons and tons of info. There are places that will even do the swap for you. If you're interested in this swap, do a search of this forum first (there are lots and lots of threads), and then ask specific questions.

BTW, I'm not currently aware of any 5 speed overdrive automatic transmissions that will easily (or even difficultly) swap in.

You could put a gear vendor overdrive on your transmission. It splits each gear giving you 6 gears.

I have the gear vendors under/overdrive in my '66 with C-4 and 3.55 gears. I like it alot and don't have to worry about it falling apart like the AOD... As far as the gear splitting goes, technically it can, but its far more practical to keep it in auto mode and use it any other automatic overdrive tranny. You can also use it manual mode in order to wind 3rd out more.

Its not a bad installation (small lie), but the price tag is around $2400...

I was thinking about the gear vedors spliter but @ 2400$ its more than I can invest right now.The main reason I want to swap for an overdrive is becasue on the highway at 70 mph the rpms are high.I dont have a tach on it so I cant tell you how high they are.

The only inexpensive solution would be to swap out to the highest gears you can (2.80's) Otherwise, an AOD would definately be the way to go. You'd keep off the line performance that way too if you have lower gears in the back.

I'd love to drive a car with the gear vendors overdrive in it. With all the conversion parts and a new tranny, a T-5 or AOD swap probably costs right around $2400 anyway.

GaPonyFarm, what was the problem with the installation? It looks pretty much like a bolt in except for shortening the driveshaft. In auto mode, does it act just like a four speed overdive or does it go through six gears?
