When i started my car the past two days it would not stay running at all. I had to let it run with my foot on the gas for like 10-15 minutes and it still wouldnt idle right. It would shut off whenever i took my foot off the gas. After driving it about 5-10 minutes it finally would idle. But that was a pain because whenever i would shift or come to a stop the rpms would drop and stall sometimes. Also the exhaust sounds real rough when i let off the gas it is sorta like a popping sound. I normally have a little gargle sound from my exhaust but this sounds differrent it almost sounds like something is clogged in the exhaust? I have done some searching on this and it sounds like it is the IAC. My question is do you think it is the IAC or could it be something else? And when changing the IAC does it just bolt right up or do i need to pick up a gasket? I plan on picking one up on my way home from school today hopefully i can put it in. Another thing is it seems to run rough when it has rained recently so could it be something to due with moisture getting into something? We just had like a foot of snow around here.

A little info on my car:
2000 GT 5 spd
UPR catted X-pipe
flowmasters
CAI
Steeda pulleys
next month 4.10s are going in (cant wait)

IAC's are known to fail on our cars. I would pick up a new one and try that. You can get one for about $40-$50 at Napa, Autozone, etc. If that doesnt fix it, I wouldn't waste more money guessing. Maybe take it to Autozone and let them check for any dagnostic codes bofore you go buying more parts.

Good Luck man.

dude this might sound stupid but try to look in your exhaust LOL! i saw a pic of a squirrel who camped out in someone's exhaust hahahah! i sh!#$#t u not! they took the pic and showed us online.

you could have a vac leak somewhere or the IAC is acting up. changing the IAC would be a good try first but try the squirrel mod first!

ford needs to change vendors on these iac valves.

you want to know the iac test i do at work when i get a ro that reads like this. remember this costs 93 dollars

special tools required
(1) hammer

1. open hood ( this can be the hardest part. especially on a old crusty explorer or something like that)

2. take special tool ( hammer) and tap iac both near the motor and at the valve.

3. start engine.. if it runs with your foot off the gas then yay!!! get a iac and charge another 93 to install it.if it still don't start the iac is too far gone for this test to work and replace iac anyways.

Tapping the IAC is a great tip.

Mike, has Ford update the IAC part? If so, what is the updated part#? I just bought one last week and I want to make sure I got a good one...

i just changed my fuel filter about a month ago and changed the plugs. It started up fine after sitting at school for about 12 hrs. I wasnt able to get an IAC today hopefully i can get one tomorrow and install it. When i install it am i going to need a gasket or use some type of gasket maker on it??

the iac is mounted on the plenum facing the front of the car. go look in the sticky at the top of this forum there is a pic of it there. you can not find a repair to do on your car easier than changing this thing. it makes changin oil look complex. 2 bolts and done. you don't even need a gasket.
