Just put an idler arm in. Heres the question for any in the know::
Where the idler arm goes through the frame and bolts up, is there supposed to be a "sleeve" or something inside the frame to keep the arm from crushing in the sides of the frame ? Anyone? Anyone??
Looking in my Big Blue Book, page 3-42, fig.22 shows two bolts going through frame. Doesn't look like any sleeve in picture. Does your car have sleeves?
Yes there is something in the frame like a sleeve....hard to describe what it looks like but it is there, and it does exactly as you say, save the frame from collapsing due to tighening the bolts.
Thanks guys. Fortunately we just put it in, no damage or rust in that rail, just gotta cut in and put that "sleevey thingamabob" in there. Anybody know what it is or a part number or where to get one?
You will have to make one.....do it the simple way. Get two sections of steel pipe from the hardware store that the bolt fits throuhg and are long enough to pass through the frame. Drill out the holes for the idler arm to the outside diameter of the pipe. Cut the pipe close to the thickness of the frame and bevel the ends for a fill weld. stick a longer bolt throught them as a handle to hold and carefully align the sleeves and do a quick spot weld on each end to hold it in place. Double check everything and make any adjustments as needed. Now fill up the beveled area with weld and grind smooth and flat to the frame.....instant, easy, strong spacers.
thx Ronstang,, I copied that to give to the fellow that does my frame work. Can it be driven , say about 40 miles or so without it in there, or should i tow it ?
You might be alright driving it if you don' tighten the bolts on the idler arm too much. Bolt it together and with the car sitting on the ground have someone move the steering lock to lock while you watch the frame area....if there is no difflection you should be OK for a short drive, but you will have to check it.
