How far should i advance my timing?

I tried to advance mine to 12, but I got pinging. That was with 87 octane though. I would just try it on 12, if it does not ping up it more.

Until it pings then back 2* or if it doesn't ping, until there is no significant power increase.

Yep - well said Don.

Seems to me that there can be a point where one goes too far with the advance and loses power, but it can be before the onset of detonation.

Just another reason to not run at the ragged edge of detonation.........

With good fuel (92 octane) you can got to 14 pretty easy. All cars are different so go as far as you can until you detonation. Then back it off a tad and try it again. Lower octane fuel (87) normally won't allow you to run more than 12 degrees.
