Seems to me that there can be a point where one goes too far with the advance and loses power, but it can be before the onset of detonation. Just another reason to not run at the ragged edge of detonation.........

All cars are different so go as far as you can until you detonation. Then back it off a tad and try it again. Lower octane fuel (87) normally won't allow you to run more than 12 degrees.
