Hi Guys. Just put my newly rebuilt 289 in my 67 complete with a new engine wiring harness, alternator, solenoid, regulator, starter and pertronix ignition. Tried turning the engine over to pumpup the oil and check its pressure and got nothing. Switched the wires on the solenoid and it turned over, only I didn't have to turn the key all the ways to start it. I only turned it to the aux, position where the key normally springs to return, and the engine started turing over. I did this several times while pumping up the oil but didn't try to start it. I noticed the ignition wires started to heat up, so I'm suspecting a dead short some where but before I start that search I was wondering if anyone had this happen to them, and what the cause might have been.

Sounds like you have the I and S wires switched on the starter motor relay/solinoid. If it wasn't started when you put the key into the crank position then maybe the ignition cylinder is bad or a wire is broken somewhere along the way.

I just put a wiring harnes in my 65 and there is a pink wire that should plug into the dash and then to the ignition. my car would turn over but not start with this wire unpluged. Did you mess with the dash or ignition wiring at all? You could have a bad solinoid

I did take the instrument panel off as I wanted to repaint the steel parts on the dash. I going to put the dash back together before I try it again. I didn't do anything with the ignition wiring. I still think I have a dead short somwhere because the ignition switch wires got hot. Thanks, I didn't see a pink wire but I'll look again.

Thanks, too busy coaching last night to check the wiring thouroughly, but once my dash is back together that'll be my next step.
