I'm finally getting my 1990 5.0 on the road after a long period up on blocks. I hasn't been registered in years since before the 2007 emissions change.

Does this mean that I need to get a roller sniff test before I become exempt, or is that rule eliminated now. Where do they have rollers any more to do the testing?

Found out what the test is. A gas cap seal and the following idle sniff test. Anyone been through this test? Do they inspect for the presence of CATs?

From the Illinois EPA website:
Idle Exhaust Tests

Heavy duty trucks (and certain passenger vehicles and light duty trucks) that were not manufactured with OBD systems, and 1995 and older vehicles that were not in compliance with the law as of February 1, 2007 receive a single speed idle test (also referred to as a “steady state” test) and a gas cap pressure test.
Preconditioning of the vehicle is very important prior to an idle test to ensure that all emission control components are in proper operating condition (e.g. at proper operating condition and the catalytic converter reaches temperatures of about 1200° F). A vehicle should be driven for at least 15 minutes before testing.
Vehicles that initially fail a test automatically receive a second-chance test after being idled at approximately 2500 rpm for 30 seconds before another sample is taken.

1995 and older vehicles are exempt from emissions testing in IL. They only test OBD II (1996+) now. If your registration lapsed and you had to re-register your car, you should be grandfathered in, IIRC.

I'm north of Chicago in Lake county. From the Illinois EPA website, the car will get a gas cap seal inspection and a idle sniff test. What I need to know is if they inspect anything else on the car from anyone who has been through the process. Do they go over the car with a mirror looking for cats? Do they pop the hood?

Thats only if your car was already legal and registered in 2007 when they changed the law.... if its been parked and unregisterd since before that, then you have to test once. then exempt

I talked to the EPA this morning. Despite what their website says, if you bring an old vehicle on the road that never passed 2007 emissions, they don't do *any* testing of pre 1996 cars. All 1995 and older cars are automatically exempt. Yay!
