indoor "dome" light is acting fishy

The dome and ceiling switch lights in my car are intermittantly not functioning. Is this normal?
I seems like, if I leave the car for a while, then come back and open the door, or turn the light nob, they won't turn on until I put my keys in the on position, or start the car.

At times, I can pull the headlight nob and then turn it, to get the dome light on, but this doesn't work all the time.

Any info on how this should work, or how I could fix it if it's broke, would be greatly appreciated.

It should come on without the key in the ignition. You should just have to open the door.

Try a new bulb. It's a cheap & easy test.

Otherwise you will have to find the electrical demon that is causing your problem.

I just replaced the bulb...didn't fix it.

So I wonder what is shutting it off?
Some kind of timer or something?
