Hey I got the cylinder heads out of my car and the head gaskets were blown. I was told I need to send them to a machine shop to have them resurfaced and pressure checked. Do I NEED to do this or do I have any other options? Is there any way to look at them and determine if they do need to be sent out or not? Also, it will cost 120 dollars for this. Can I get aftermarket heads for a 3.8 for close to this or what other options are there? Thanks
Having them tanked, cleaned and inspected is the correct way to do it. You can put a straight edge across the bottom of them to see if the the head is warped but it is not 100% accurate, some cracks will not be visable unless checked by a machine shop.
$120 sounds like a decent deal, usually $50 per head to resurface for a v8.
