Intake and Carburator

So, I am upgrading some things and I want to get a new intake manafold on my 1966 289, What type and kind should I get?

I would like to change my carburator.... should I go with 2 or 4 barrel and what type?

I am getting headers, what type and size?

Valve Cover that are less likely to leak?

Keep in mind, I am only looking for Hp increase but not for racing and I do not want to have to modify anything....... Does anyone have sugestions?

I'm guessing you want to use it for the street and just warm your enigne up a bit. Obvioulsy theres the tried and true Edelbrock Performer and Performer RPM intake manifolds. From what I know the carbs work pretty well too, if anyone knows otherwise please say something. If your looking for HP a 4bbl is probably on the list. Lately I have been hearing alot about how great the Autolite 4100 factory carbs are. If your engine has the stock cam and heads, I wouldn't go above a 500cfm carb. Weiand stealth or edelbrock performer RPM for the intake. Stay away from the performer, basically the same as stock. Air gap is a waste of money.

For the carb, go with 600cfm if you plan on upgraded cam and heads later. Im going to recommend a holley 4160 600cfm carb if you have the time and patience to learn to tune it. If not, go with the edelbrock.

True, the performer flows about the same as the stock 4bbl piece, just weighs less.

All I can say for an intake is get a dual plane. You'll keep some torque that way and stil see a power increase.

1. You can get small or large 2bbl carbs, but you'll probably see more economy with an equal CFM 4bbl. I would tend toward a vacuum secondary for your goals. I agree that 600CFM is about right.

2. 1 1/2" primaries will suit you well and wont sacrifice much torque. I personally prefer longtubes, but I need to get rid of some 1 5/8" Flowtech 5.0 shorties .

3. Just about any name-brand cast aluminum cover.

A mild cam would also better take advantage of these mods, but it isnt the first mod I would do.

i recomend either the edelbrock performer rpm or weiand stealth intake, along with a 500cfm carb. for a stock or near stock 289/302 thats all you need. for a carb go with the 1.08 4100 autolite or the 500 cfm edelbrock performer carb. the 4100 autolite is a great carb, i had one on my mustang and the throttle response was great, as well as fuel economy(25mpg!!). when i put a 600cfm holley on the engine, it tended to fall flat on its face, even after changing jetting, etc. and fuel economy went into the dumper.

Another intake to get is the old Ford C9OX, Shelby "Cobra" high rise, Edelbrocks older F4B, or the newer Ford A321. These are all the same intake, just different names. Great for stock to wild 289's and 302's. It's a high rise dual plane aluminum intake with a different runner configuration than the others listed. Works great with a Holley list 1850 600 cfm 4 bbl carb. And no matter what the others have said about them, they are not hard to tune or keep in tune. And do get good fuel economy when in tune and you keep your foot out of it.

I am pleased with Edelbrock 500 cfm carb, performer intake and cam. Good stuff, easy to work with and tune. Pertronics ignition is another good add. I went with HI-PO stock ehausts and duals.

any dual plane intake, and 4bbl carb will be a step up from the steel 2bbl carb/intake that is on the motor.

Mileage will drop based on the weight of your right foot. a 4bbl carb is only 4bbls when you need it.

Considering how you need to replace the oil pan, I personally would pull the motor, replace the cam, intake and the lifters/pushrods. that should wake up your motor for the time being. Then you can start to piece together the replacement motor

If you stick with the 289/302 block then you can keep the intake, headers and carb for the next one. Plus the brackets and pulleys will be the same.

ebay is your friend. you can pick up an intake and carb for pretty cheap.
