Intake Obstruction Remove

I finally got around to removing the hydrocarbon obstruction in the intake. No problems so far. My Gt was an early October build. Any comments?

I don't have any pics, but if you can imagine a can of Bud cut in half and filled with concrete you'd have a good idea of the size, look, feel and weight of this lovely item. Oh, and the concrete interior has holes like swiss cheese.

Out with that nasty obstruction - in with clean ariflow and more power!

Any comments? October? You should have took it out long ago.

You sure it isn't intended for straightening the air flow path for proper MAF sensor readings?

I've had mine out for a few months now, no issues, haven't really felt any difference either.

The factory quit installing the HC traps about 4/11/05. (Mine was built 4/29; doesn't have one.) Unless they simultaneously changed the flash software (which I don't know if they did or not) when they ceased installing the traps, you shouldn't have any problem if you remove one.

It's not possible that it is straightening the airflow since there is no direct routing of air through the thing. Now, maybe it was designed to have minimal impact on airflow, but it's hard to see how a one pound, half-can of Bud with cement inside does that!

carbon trap

If you have the carbon trap, remove it. It was originally designed to catch fuel vapors escaping from the intake after the engine was shut off when hot. The vapors would be drawn back into the engine when restarted and burned. Ford deleted this from production as of 4-4-05. The PCM calibration was not changed. My 05 did not have this (built 5-5-05) so I contacted Ford's tech hotline. Got the above info straight from the plant engineer. Hope this helps.

The trap is after the MAF and it's a vapor trap not a air straightener.

Ah, ok, because on some of the GM MAF's, they have a screen on the upstream side to straighten the airflow path so the MAF doesn't take a reading from a turbulent air mass passing through.

But seeing it is after the MAF, who cares right.
