I had the interior of my car painted at the same time as the rest of the car. The outside is fine and even the inside of the doors are ok, but everytime I barely bump or rub the instument panel with a tool, instrument cluster housing, glove box door, radio knobs, etc. during removal or installation, the paint chips down to bare metal. I can understand if I really smacked it hard with something, but it seems like I can't even touch it without chipping the paint.

My question is: Did the body shop forget to apply some kind of clear coat to the instrument panel? It gets me mad because the paint doesn't seem to be durable whatsoever. And if they need to paint it over again, I'll have to remove everything on the dash panel that I spent so much time and effort installing. Not to mention possible overspray on my new carpet and seats.

Another thing they forgot to do is paint the inside of the pillars between the windshield and front doors. Is it possible for them to mask the entire interior and exterior to paint these without overspray?

Has anyone else had similar problems? I don't know anything about body work or paint so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Carl

As far as I know, if the paint chipped down to bare metal, they didn't prepare the surface properly. Even if they didn't clear coat it, the paint shouldn't chip that easily.

more then likely,it wasnt prepped and the paint rpimer/paint didnt "bite" into the metal. Mine is the same way, probably not at delicate, but it does chip.Only thing you can do is reshoot the interior.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be a surface prep or primer problem. Oh well, the guys at the body shop are going to have a fun time removing everything from the instrument panel, painting it correctly then reinstalling everything without scratching it!
