Is 300hp/tq reasonable with my combo?

I'm making this my goal without switching cams. I'm going to port my gt40's and get the .194 valves, do the damn t-5 swap, 30lb inj. with Pro-M MAF, tweecer(of course), and that's it. I hit 240hp and 265tq with the damn rev limiter hittin at 5400rpm and running lean. I'm guessing if I didn't have the limiter or the lean problem, I would have hit, at least 250hp and 275tq if not more. If my tranny is eating 5% more power than a t-5, that equivalates to 16 more hp/tq which would bring me to about 267hp and 292tq. Do you guys think that the porting of the heads with valve job and a good tune be enough to push me into 300hp/tq? If not, what do I need?

Your goal is do-able, but NOT the way you're going about it.

Ok, so how should I go about it? I mean, without having to buy new heads and cam?

The cam is very critical here. A good cam, valve springs, a good valve job will help too. The lower intake may need work but what I listed should do it since its only 300rwhp you want.

95snoozer did 300rwhp with gt40 P heads with some work.

I really don't want to spend extra for a cam. How close do you think I'll come if I stick to my original plan?

I would guess about 280 or so

If you want the numbers, buy the parts necessary to acheive them. If not, leave it be. The money you piss away porting the heads can be put to better use with a cam and valve springs. A good valve job should hellp though.

I already have new valve springs. It was just a question, I wanted to see if I could get there, if not, no worries. I don't want to spend anymore money on my car than I already am.

It cost me a whopping $35 in cartridge rolls to port mine.

With the heads ported, the e-cam should work fine for you IMO.

Which springs are you running? Whats the seat pressure and open pressure? You want to be in the 110lb/290lb range with that cam.

You will need to really plan it out and seek all the info you can find IMHO.

I gotta tell you, based on the years I've been on these boards

Most of these combo types don't quite make it to your goal.

There is a thread where pages & pages of posts about this very question you ask are talked about. I would think that thread could help you for sure. IMHO, if it was easy, there would not be as many peeps as there are involved in that thread.

IIRC, you can find a link to that thread in Snoozer's sig.

It was called, holy grail or something sorta like that

Here is my combo and Im hoping to get almost 300hp out of it. Stock cam, AFR 165 heads, ported cobra lower, fox cobra upper, 70mm tb, 24lb injectors. I think I will probably end up just shy of 300rwhp, but it will be close enough. That 300 mark is the magical spot, and getting over 300rwhp on a 302 does take some money. there is no way to do it cheap, unless you have the skills to do a junk yard turbo or something. but n/a you need the right parts and the combo is everything. Those GT40 heads will limit you in stock trim.

Haven't run it yet, nor do I have an e-cam. But others have done well with the e-cam despite people bashing it. Don't forget, bigger isn't always better.

While I have to admit that attaining 300 wheel horse power sounds sexy as hell with the stock cam, it might not be worth it.

I think there are two important questions when you start modding your car: How much power do you want, and why do you want it? The first question is easy (as much as possible), the second one is a lot harder.

Sure you could use the stocker and try for 300whp at 4800 rpms, but its gonna start to crap out soon after. Or you could use a cam ground for power... still hitting the same peak number but having useable power to 6500 rpms. Which one is the faster car?

I almost fell into this trap myself. If you're overall goal for the vehicle is 300rwhp with the stock cam, then go for it. But if you're interested in making a fast street/strip car, then I wouldn't invest any more money in the stock camshaft. Its simply not built for speed or power, but for emissions and driveability.

Like the TB Nazi (grn92LX) said, what do you run? Are you racing dyno's or cars?

And as far as Snoozer, hopefully he chimes in, but I'm almost positive he used an e-cam. And a lot of hardwork in the weight reduction department.

This is just a quick reply to say the Snooze man used a Comp xe270 cam and the guy in the link I gave above used an e-cam.

Yes, I saw that and that is why I said with careful planning you might be able to hit the 300 bench mark.

If you remember maybe like a week or two ago ................

Tom Moss posted up his file that shows a good number of our various combos in numerical form.

I say this to show that even though I am not a fan of the e-cam, he has several in that file make good power NA power with it.

Go ahead and search out that post and see for your self.

I will go on record right here and now and say it this way ...

You can make good power with the older technology stuff like ...
oem iron heads
cams specs that crutch the exhaust for those oem heads
oem manifolds like gt40
and any other stuff that was popular when the 5.0 was young
however
ALL the parts of the combo have to work together well.

I have a feeling most who go that route are on a tight budget and don't have each and every combo part ... just as it needs to be.

Planning is cruical to any combo if you want the best results.

Kinda like most who have a combo like mine fall around 300 give or take.
however
Several have made it to 325 give or take.

Again ...... better planning gave them ...... better yield.

I know for certain this ...... if I did it all over again .............

I could go a good bit beyond what I did the first time

Thats the great thing about these boards

The data is there for anybody to learn from
