Hey, does anyone know if the factory h-pipe is stainless? It is magnetic but I've read that doesn't always mean it's not stainless.

Nope

SS is not magnetic at all

EDIT: Exhaust system SS (304 or 316) is not.

Actually, there are some stainless that are magnetic, Non-magnetic stainless is the preferred choice of Restaurants, and Hospitals. But Stainless can even rust. I have a write up I found a while back when I was doing research on this same subject.

The Truth about Stainless Steel - Because not all Stainless Steel is created equally

Its about buying a stainless steel gas grill, but it explains a little bit.

Thanks everyone, I figured it probly wasn't but I took it off after 19 years and its got some surface type rust but nothing serious. Maybe because that part of the exhaust runs so hot and it seems like pretty thick tubing.

Yes I believe the only company that sells a stainless unit is bassani, and even then I think only the cats are stainless. I could be mistaken...Magnaflow also uses "stainless" mufflers and tips. I can't see ford using anything better than cheapy steel

I was under the impression that the factory H-pipe is stainless. ...But the cheaper type of stainless that rust, and metal that rust is magnetic, right?

To clarify, all metals (except a few like gold and aluminum) Rust, Rust is iron oxidation, Gold oxidizes and so does Aluminum, but not the nasty rust we see on our car parts.

Stainless steel is simply less prone to it because of the metals that go into it. Any imperfections in the finish would yield crevices that would hold moisture and dirt etc, and this would eventually lead to rust even in stainless steel. There are different grades of stainless steel. Some magnetic some not, mostly non-(used in hospitals and food grade cutlery). But there are still true stainless metals that are magnetic, as far as the stock h-pipe is concerned, I cannot recall exactly, I merely wanted to explain that it is possible.

Most exhaust systems will be made of 304 or 409 type SS. 304 is more expensive, but resists corrosion and heat better.

You mean 440 stainless??

It's used in swords because it's hard as hell when heat treated...but not really desirable in a functional sword. Carbon steel is a little more desirable if you plan on fighting in the Crusades with it.
