thats pretty high, I got my motor for 250 with all electronics, it was missing the turbo that i then got for 50.. Honestly if you find a decent milage 2.3T in the junkyard itll probably be just fine. I swapped mine in as is.. And so far so good.
Damn, dude that is a major rip. I built the engine that I just dropped in my car, including the bob's log and other "goodies" I got for it and a new clutch, for what that guy's charging for his engine. Engine- basically free ($150 for a car to pull it from, made that back selling the interior), hot tank/hone block - $100 or so, head work- $175, rings & full gasket kit $135.
Thanks, I think I'll just start hitting the Junkyards. Have any recommendations about the tranny? Is there any way to know if its in good shape without taking it home and installing it?
Red LX, I bought the book you recommended. (Tom Monroe - Engine Builders Handbook) I looked through it and it looks like there are too many parts for me - Not to mention the tools. I don't think I could possibly put it all back together without messing something up. If anything I would change the head gasket. That doesn't seem to get very complicated. Is that a fairly easy job?
What is the difference between the stock shifter and an aftermarket shifter? "short-throw"? Is it worth getting an aftermarket shifter and what should I expect to pay. Also how much does the quality vary in clutches? 50resto has a ford racing clutch for $170. They all seem to be in the $120-170 range, is it worth the extra money or are they all about the same?
Aw hell...it's really not that bad. The engine in my car is the first one I've ever built, and it seems to be running great so far. Also, you don't have to have ALL the tools listed in that book to build an engine. Plus, a 2.3L seems to me like a good first engine to build because it's very simple. The biggest rules are 1) Double check everything as you're putting it in, 2) Be as CLEAN as possible! and 3) Triple check everything you torque.
However, if you still don't feel up to it...well, don't pay $1100 for a reringed engine. I could see MAYBE paying that much for an assembled long block with new pistons, but otherwise no. Keep this in mind- I bought my Turbo Coupe for $1250.
I guess when I get the engine I'll decide to mess with it or just drop it in. Any help on the transmission though? Someone fairly local offered me a rebuilt T-5 for $400. It hasn't been used since the rebuild. I can't imagine that finding a JY tranny and rebuilding it myself would be too much cheaper. Maybe I don't even need to rebuild the tranny...this is getting too complicated. I need to get a second job.
